HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth track and field coaches have announced the team's incoming class of 2013 as the Big Green welcome athletes from all over the country and Canada.
On the men's side:
Distance and Middle Distance
David Connolly (Altanta, Ga.) won his division of the Georgia state XC championship. His high school coach, Roy Benson '63, is a nationally known author and a columnist for Running Times magazine. Mike Danaher (Clifton Park, N.Y.) ran for New York's powerhouse Shenendehowa team that qualified for the Nike HS XC nationals. He has also run 4:17 for the 1600 and 9:25 for the 3200. Adam Doherty (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) has the fastest incoming time for the 3200 of the class of 2013, 9:18.20. His 4 x mile relay team placed 3rd at the Nike outdoor nationals. Jonathan Gault (Bedford, Mass.) came on like gangbusters at the end of his high school career. He ran a personal record for the two mile at the Massachusetts state meet of 9:22.21. He followed that up by earning All-American honors in the 5000 at the Nike Outdoor meet where he ran 15:11.21. Anthony Romaniw (Hamilton, Ont.) brings some pretty impressive credentials with him to Hanover. In July, he won the Canadian Junior championships in the 800. Earlier in the season, he blazed a 1:50.8 for an open 800. He has good 400 speed, 49.42, which will allow him to continue to develop at Dartmouth. Phil Royer (Portsmouth, R.I.) was a 3 sport star for St. George's prep school. He played soccer in the fall, squash in the winter, and ran track in the spring. He won the NEPSTA title in the 1500 and has a PR of 4:02.
Sprints and Hurdles
One of the staff's recruiting priorities was the hurdles and this year's class looks ready to help out immediately with two additions in that area. Another goal was replacing Tim Edmonds '09, a Heps finalist at 200 and 400. The new sprint crew looks up to the challenge. Brendin Beaulieu-Jones (Vernon, Conn.) has run well at a variety of distances. He has been clocked at 15.20 for the 110 Hurdles, 39.45 for the 300 Hurdles, and 56.84 for the 400 Hurdles. Tyrone DeSpenza (Los Angeles, Calif.) was recommended to the coaches by former Big Green jump star Randy McKnight '08. He will give the team much needed depth in the 100 where he was timed in 11.03. Jake Evanter (Marblehead, Mass.) was his conference champion in both the 55 and 110 Hurdles. He has run 7.7 and 14.6 for those distances. Austin Goldberg (Lake Bluff, Ill.) was first team all conference and first team all county in both the 100 and 200. His conference meet used hand times where he ran 10.6 and 22.4. Connor Reilly (New York, N.Y.) impressed the coaches at the Dartmouth Relays and he went on to an outstanding senior year. In the indoor season he raced to times of 6.64 in the 55 and 7.15 in the 60. At his outdoor state meet, he surged to an excellent mark of 10.93 in the 100.
Field Events
Kevin Crowley (Barrington, Ill.) is a jumper with sprinter's speed. His best long jump effort of 22-9.5 puts him in scoring range at the Heps right away. He has also run 50.5 for the 400 and is a valuable relay performer. All pole vaulters are athletic, but Barrett Folk (Memphis, Tenn.) is truly versatile. He has not only cleared 15-0 in the vault, he was his state champion in the decathlon. Dartmouth has a history of great multi-eventers and Brett Gilson (Richboro, Pa.) could be next on the list. He has put up quality marks in the throws, jumps and on the track. He has gone over 14-6 in the vault, thrown the javelin 201-4, long jumped 21-11.5 and run 51.0 for the 400. He will have a quality score in the heptathlon and decathlon as a frosh. Alexander Meill (Kentfield, Calif.) struggled with injuries his senior year. When healthy, however, he has vaulted 15-6. Tom Vorhies (NJ) has done well with a multitude of throwing implements. He has tossed the shot 56-6.25, heaved the weight 56-11, and hurled the discus 150-2.
On the women's side:
Distance and Middle-Distance
Kaitlyn D'Orazio (York, Maine) was a great catch for coach Maribel Souther '96. She is a truly versatile distance runner who not only won the state title in the 800, but was also the state XC runner-up. That kind of range is invaluable. Her 800 PR of 2:12.18 is particularly outstanding. Katie Sullivan (Carmel, N.Y.) is equally adept at a wide range of events. On the track, she has run well at distances from the 800 to the 5000 with times of 2:16 and 17:58. In the post-season, she shined in the 2000 meter steeplechase and earned All-American honors at the Nike Outdoor Nationals as she clocked a time of 7:11. She was also seventh at the indoor high school nationals in the 5K with a time of 17:56. Melanie Wilcox (Dallas, Texas) looks ready to crack the Big Green's top seven in XC as a frosh. She has posted times of 5:01.84 for the 1600 and 10:52.04 for the 3200. In the 3200, she was the Texas Private and Parochial schools state champion.
Sprints and Hurdles
Olivia Bruton (Bronxville, N.Y.) competed for the powerhouse Bronxville HS team in a variety of sprint and middle-distance events. Her best effort was in the 600 where she ran 1:37.4. Christine Bub (Strykersville, N.Y.) was the “Athlete of the Year” at her high school, Letchworth Central. She has excelled at both the 800 and 400 Hurdles. She won her section meet in the 800 and her PR is 2:16.27. Caroline Buck (Winter Park, Fla.) won the “Scholar Athlete Award” at her high school, Winter Park. She had great success in the relay events. She has run the 800 in 2:18. Olivia Durr (Boyds, Md.) will give the Big Green an outstanding hurdler. She was the Maryland state champion during the indoor season at 55 meters and the outdoor champion at 100 meters. Her PR's of 14.74 and 44.78 will make her an immediate threat to score at Heps. At the Penn Relays, she moved up to the 400 Hurdles and had a quality PR of 63.65.
Elizabeth Garland (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) gives the team help in both the 100 and the 400 relay. Her best 100 time of 12.5 will help the Green immediately. Chelsea Hassett (Alpharetta, Ga.) was named as her school's candidate for the High School Heisman Award. She has run the 200 in 26.97 and the 400 in 59.51. Alexandra Kurkul (Exeter, N.H.) travelled across the Granite State from Exeter to Hanover to join the Dartmouth squad. She was the top senior performer at her school, Exeter. She was forth in the 400 at the Meet of Champions and has run 57.48. She is also quite capable at the 200 where she has clocked 25.9. Cassandra Ryding (Westford, Mass.) was second in her all state meet in the 55 Hurdles and she has been timed in 8.36. She went on to grab another runner-up finish in the New England championships in the same event. During the outdoor season, she was equally successful at the 100 Meter Hurdle distance where she ran 14.9. She was the female athlete of the year at Westford Academy. Elizabeth Scafuro (New Britain, Pa.) has run well at the full range of sprints, from the 100 to the 400. Her 4 x 400 relay squad was 5th at the Pennsylvania state meet. She has posted times of 12.71, 26.23, and 58.94. She will be a strong leg on several Dartmouth relays.
Field Events
Emmaline Berg (Holliston, Mass.) will enter Dartmouth as one of the top high school throwers that we have ever recruited. Her list of honors includes winning the New England championships in the shot put, placing third at the Nike Indoor Nationals, and winning the Massachusetts state meet. Her life time best throw in the shot put of 43-9 would already make her a Hep's scorer. Alexandra Procopius (Warwick, R.I.) has already made great progress in the throwing the hammer and weight, events not contested in every state. She was fifth in the Weight at her indoor meet and has tossed the implement 41-5. In the spring, she was sixth in the state meet in the Hammer and has hurled the ball 148-7. Karla Verkow (Lancaster, Pa.) is an accomplished vaulter that was fifth at her high school state meet. She has already cleared the bar at 11-6, a height that often places at Heps.
