HANOVER, N.H. – After Dartmouth tied the game at 1-1 midway through the second period, seventh-ranked Harvard netted three unanswered goals to defeat the Big Green, 4-1, in women's hockey action on Friday afternoon.
Dartmouth (8-12-2, 5-10-1 ECAC, 3-5-0 Ivy) got its lone goal from freshman Sally Komarek (Minneapolis, Minn.) with the assists going to classmates Lisa Berreman (Eagan, Minn.) and Margaux Sharp (Carleton Place, Ont.). Senior Mariel Lacina (London, Ont.) took the loss, making 24 saves.
The story for Harvard was freshman netminder Laura Bellamy, who made 37 stops between the pipes with 15 stops in the first and 17 in the second. Kate Buesser was the offensive star with three points on two goals and an assist for three points.
After a scoreless opening period, things heated up in the second. Harvard got on the scoreboard first with a power play goal from Kathryn Farni with Leanna Coskren adding the assist. All it took was 16 seconds into the man advantage for the Crimson to open the scoring. Farni blasted a shot from the left circle that beat Lacina to the top of the net.
Dartmouth answered five minutes later with 12:55 left in the second frame. Berreman spotted Komarek streaking all alone at the offensive blueline and hit her in stride. Komarek skated in on a breakaway, going forehand to backhand and chipping it up and over Bellamy's right pad to tie the score at 1-1.
Harvard (11-5-4, 9-5-2 ECAC, 4-2-2 Ivy) went back up by the score of 2-1 with 3:28 remaining. Liza Ryabkina skated into the zone with a 2-on-1 opportunity and hit Buesser's stick with a great pass just above the crease. Buesser then buried it for the 2-1 lead. After outshooting the Crimson, 15-10, in the first period, Dartmouth was doubled up in category in the second, 12-6
In the third period, Harvard added to its lead with a pair of goals in the frame. Buesser netted her second of the night with 8:51 remaining to make it 3-1. Ryabkina assisted on the play for her second of the evening. The Crimson put the game out of reach with 2:03 left in the game with Kaitlin Spurling scoring the goal. Randi Griffin and Buesser added the assists.
Dartmouth finished the night with 38 total shots to 28 from the Crimson. The Big Green had its opportunities on the power play. Dartmouth was 0-for-5 on the man advantage, while Harvard got one goal in three chances.
The Big Green will be off until next Friday night as Yale comes to Hanover for the third annual Pink at the Rink game, beginning at 7 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
