CHARLESTOWN, R.I. — Sophomore
James Pleat (Nashua, N.H.) carded a two-over 73 in the opening round of The Classic at Shelter Harbor to help Dartmouth finish the day in tied for eighth place among the 16 teams at Shelter Harbor Golf Club. The Big Green, with a 308 (+24) are just nine strokes behind the leader, Columbia, as the top 13 teams are separated by just 11 strokes in the hotly contested tournament.
Taylor Fontaine of host Rhode Island was the only golfer to break par on Saturday, posting a one-under 70, while Harvard's Tony Grillo shot even par. Pleat is tied for fifth place with his 73, trailing Bryant's Brent Besch and Hartford's Matt Smith, who both were one-over par.
Also placing among the top 20 in the first round for Dartmouth was freshman Joe Mazier (Atlanta, Ga.) with a 75 (+4) to tie for 15th. Mazier rebounded from a rough front nine to shoot a 33 on the back.
Junior
Peter Williamson (Hanover, N.H.) finished the day with a 79 (+8) and is in a tie for 50th, while senior
Davis Mullany (Great Barrington, Mass.) shot 10-over par to tie for 60th. Sophomore
Teddy Overton (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) rounded out the Big Green golfers with an 83 (+12).
The tournament will conclude on Sunday.
