NEW YORK, N.Y. — The Dartmouth women's soccer team traveled to Columbia on Saturday and left with a victory over the conference-leading Lions, 2-1. The win improved the Big Green to 5-7-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the Ivy League.
"This is a huge result for our team, because this is a tough place to come and play," head coach Angie Hind said. "We matched their intensity and were able to capitalize on our chances."
Columbia entered the contest on an eight-game unbeaten streak. The Lions ranked third in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic region poll and were receiving votes in the national top-25.
The match was scoreless for the first 37 minutes, until Dartmouth scored the first goal. In the 38th minute, freshman Chrissy Lozier (Fairfield, Conn.) crossed the ball into the box. Senior Melisa Krnjaic (Washington, D.C.) played the ball back across the box, and senior Peyton Tata flicked it into the back of the net. It was her fourth goal of the season. It was Lozier's second assist and Krnjaic's second.
The score remained 1-0 into intermission and for the first 30 minutes of the second half. In the 75th minute, the Big Green had a corner kick and put the ball into the box. The Lion's goalie, Lillian Klein, punched the ball out and Lozier was right there to head the ball back into the goal. The score marked her second goal of the season and her third point of the game.
The Lions responded quickly to Dartmouth's second goal. In the 76th minute, Columbia's Coleen Rizzo knocked in a cross from Beverly Leon. It marked Rizzo's second goal of the year. The Lions put on the pressure in attempts to score the equalizer but the Dartmouth defense held strong to close out the contest.
"Our defense had a fantastic night," said Hind. "Columbia attacked the whole night and our back row just held them back."
Dartmouth looks to build on its two-game winning streak when it hosts Harvard on Saturday, October 30, at 4 p.m.
