HANOVER, N.H. – Adding another positive note to its season, the Dartmouth field hockey team had four players rewarded for their stellar play by being named to various All-Ivy teams on Wednesday.
Senior Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) and junior Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) were both named to the first team while seniors Claire Byrne (Rye, N.Y.) and Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.) earned second-team and honorable-mention honors, respectively.
In 13 games, Hood established herself as one of the most dangerous scorers in the country. She recorded 18 goals and three assists for 39 points, including six goals in Ivy play. Her 1.38 goals per game clip ranks third in Div. I, and her 1.50 goals per Ivy game ranks second only to Kathleen Sharkey of Princeton. Hood was also a first team All-Ivy selection as a sophomore and an honorable-mention pick as a freshman. This was the first unanimous selection for Hood, who missed the final four games of the season after being injured on Oct. 16. When she begins her senior campaign in 2011 she will be looking to become Dartmouth's all-time goal scorer and points leader. Hood needs just four goals and 12 points to move into first place in both categories.
Playing in the back and in the midfield, Peisch was the cog that
made a Dartmouth offense rank fourth in the country with a
3.70 scoring average. An assist machine, she totaled 21
helpers on the year and, in the six Ivy League games played, she tied for
the league lead with seven assists.
Peisch set the school's record for career assists on
Sept. 5 when she recorded two in the Big
Green's 5-3 come-from-behind win over Missouri State,
finishing her career with 52. She also earned first-team
honors for the third consecutive year, becoming the 36th player to
earn three All-Ivy First-Team honors and just the fourth member of
the Big Green to do so (last accomplished at Dartmouth by Carolyn Steele, 2000-2002).
Byrne earned her first-ever league award after she tallied a career-high 17 points in 2010. Bryne roamed the midfield for the Big Green and started all 17 games for Dartmouth with four goals and nine assists. In seven Ivy contests, she recorded three assists while helping lead the Big Green to its first double-digit winning season since 2002.
McHenry finished third on the team in scoring with a career-high 31 points, her second double-digit scoring effort in as many years. She made 16 starts and was second for Dartmouth in shots with 51. Eight of McHenry's points came in Ivy games as the forward recorded a four-point day against Penn, tying her career-high, and also tallied the helper in a 1-0 shutout of Harvard.
