Big Green Open Season with Scrimmages at Yale

HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's squash team kicked off the 2010-11 season by traveling to Yale for the Ivy Scrimmages on Nov. 6 & 7.

It was the first outing for Big Green freshmen Kate Nimmo (Wellesley, Mass.), Gina Balch (Edmonton, Alta.) and Melina Turk (Winnipeg, Man.). The first match on Saturday was an uphill battle against the host Bulldogs, who were the eventual winners of the scrimmages.

Though the team battled hard they lost by a score of 1-8, with the solitary win coming at the hands of Valeria Wiens (Hanover, N.H.) at the No. 1 spot. Later in the day the Big Green matched up with Brown as the Big Green cruised to a spectacular 9-0 win. The win allowed Dartmouth to then battle it out with Cornell on Sunday morning in a match that the Big Green has always come close in but enough to win. This time around, however, Dartmouth's pre-season preparation paid off with a 5-4 victory. Becky Lau (Toronto, Ont.) and Sarah Loucks (Boston, Mass.) each won pivotal matches to help clinch the victory.

This weekend was a good indicator of things to come from the women's team who will be looking to get more training time in before the Big Green opens at home for the Fall Classic on Nov. 19-21.
