CANTON, NY - The Dartmouth women's hockey team fell to St. Lawrence after its rally from three goals down came up short as the Big Green finished its season with a 4-3 loss in upstate New York.
Dartmouth (12-14-2, 9-12-1 ECAC) dropped its final game and Colgate escaped Rensselaer with a 3-2 win, so the Big Green finished one point out of the ECAC Hockey Tournament.
Senior co-captain Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) finished her outstanding career with a goal tonight to give her 40 points this year, which led the Big Green. She posted 20 goals and 20 assists and concluded her four-year career with 156 points. Sophomores Geneva Kliman (Toronto, Ont.) and Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.) also scored for the Big Green. Senior Mariel Lacina (London, Ont.) took the loss, making 22 saves.
St. Lawrence stormed out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Kirsten Roach, Vanessa Emond and Lauren Brozowski. Kayla Sullivan netted the eventual gamewinner in the second period on the power play, while Britni Smith and Michelle Zimmerman each added a pair of assists in the win. Brittany Chartier saved the Saints in the final period with 19 saves in the frame and made 29 total stops between the pipes.
St. Lawrence took the first lead of the game with 8:29 left in the opening period on a goal by Roach with the assists going to Jamie Goldsmith and Zimmerman. The goal came after Lacina made the first save on Goldsmith, but Roach was there to put home the rebound to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Emond gave St. Lawrence a confortable lead at 2-0 with 4:05 remaining in the first frame with the assists credited to Courtney Sawchuk and Smith.
The Saints posted a 9-5 advantage in shots after one period of play and it was a clean first frame as neither team committed a penalty.
Brozowski struck again in the second period with her second of the night, coming with 10:43 remaining in the frame. Zimmerman assisted on the play as did Tara Akstull to increased St. Lawrence's lead to 3-0 over the Big Green.
Parsons got Dartmouth back into the game to make it 3-1 on her 20th of the season and posted a point to extend her point streak to six games. The assists was awarded to senior co-captain Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) and came with 7:36 remaining in the middle frame.
The Big Green took a penalty 20 seconds after scoring its first goal and the Saints made Dartmouth pay for the mistake. Sullivan netted the power play goal with assists to Smith and Kelly Sabatine. The goal came less than a minute into the man advantage and with 5:44 left in the second period.
Kliman and the Big Green did not go away though as the Dartmouth defenseman scored her first collegiate goal 2:10 after St. Lawrence went back up by three goals. Junior Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) was given the assist to make it 4-2.
The Saints once again had the shots advantage in the second period with a 12-7 edge, while Dartmouth committed the lone penalty and St. Lawrence had not visited the box in 40 minutes of play.
Dartmouth narrowed the Saints lead to 4-3, just 1:42 into the final frame as Foley netted her first goal since Nov. 21 at Yale and it was a welcome back for Foley after missing 13 games with a leg injury. Senior Sarah Toupal (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and freshman Sally Komarek (Minneapolis, Minn.) were given assists on the play.
The Big Green peppered Chartier the rest of the way, but couldn't find a way to put the puck in the net as the Saints held off Dartmouth for the 4-3 win. Dartmouth held a 32-29 shot advantage and each team only got one chance on the power play. The Saints made their opportunity count with the game-winner on the man advantage.
Dartmouth finishes its season with a 12-14-2 overall mark and a 9-12-1 mark in ECAC Hockey play. Seniors Parsons, Cunningham, Toupal, Lacina, Sarah Kennedy (Jasper, Alta.) and Sue Schmitz (Brookfield, Wis.) competed in their final game. The class of 2010 finished their careers with three trips to the NCAA Tournament, two ECAC Hockey Tournament titles, an Ivy League championship and a ECAC Hockey Regular Season title.
