SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 38th-ranked Dartmouth women's tennis team got wins from its top three singles players to help the Big Green sneak past No. 75 UC Santa Barbara, 4-3, on Monday afternoon.
Junior Molly Scott (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.), freshman Sarah Leonard (Norwalk, Conn.), and senior Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.) all earned victories at the top three singles spots. Scott had her closest two-set match of the season and escaped with a 7-5, 7-6 (6), win. Winingham won by the same score as Scott at the No. 3 spot, while Leonard made quick work of her Gauchos competition with a win at No. 2 (6-3, 6-3).
The Big Green clinched the important doubles point convincingly as Dartmouth swept all three matches. Scott and Winingham teamed up to win the first doubles match of the afternoon with an 8-3 win and Leonard and sophomore Carissa King (Charlotte, N.C.) also won at No. 3 by an 8-6 score. Junior Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) and senior captain Jesse Adler (Winnetka, Ill.) finished off the doubles point with an 8-4 win.
Dartmouth is now 12-2 on the season and the Gauchos, hot off a 5-2 win over No. 62 UC-Irvine, are 7-9. The Big Green is off tomorrow and will continue play on Wednesday in a match with Cal State Northridge at 2 p.m.
