No. 53 Women's Tennis Falls to No. 46 Yale

HANOVER, N.H. - Seniors Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.), co-captain Jesse Adler (Winnetka, Ill.), and Carley Markovitz (South Pasadena, Calif.) battled valiantly to reverse a 3-1 deficit, as they all pushed their Yale opponents to third sets this afternoon at the Boss Tennis Center.
However, the No. 46 Bulldogs ultimately prevailed in all three matches, as No. 53 Dartmouth fell 6-1.
Freshman Sarah Leonard (Norwalk, Conn.) got the lone Big Green win at No. 2 singles. Dartmouth moves to 16-4 (3-2 Ivy League), while Yale is 15-5 (4-1 Ivy League).
The doubles action had fans in the packed Boss Center on the edge of their seats, as Dartmouth was narrowly defeated at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Junior Molly Scott (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) and Winingham, who recently moved up to No. 34 in the national doubles rankings, suffered their first Ivy League loss at No. 1, falling 9-7 to Vicky Brook and Lindsay Clark. Sophomore Carissa King (Charlotte, N.C.) and Leonard were edged in a tiebreaker 9-8 at No. 2. Yale made it a clean sweep with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 over junior Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) and Adler.
At No. 1 singles, Scott, who recently moved into the national singles rankings at No. 122, fell 6-2, 7-6 to Brook, a crafty Brit with a tough all-court game. At No. 2, Leonard downed in straight sets Stephanie Kent, who had played No. 1 for most of the year. And Smyser fell in straight sets at No. 5 to the Bulldogs' blue-chip freshman Elizabeth Epstein.
Dartmouth travels to Brown on Sunday, April 18, at 12 noon.
