HANOVER, NH - At the Coed New England Championships this weekend at Connecticut College, the Dartmouth coed sailing team just missed a shot at nationals finishing two spots out of the running.
The Big Green fought hard but did not quite make the top eight teams, and thus missed out on a berth to the national semifinals. Dartmouth finished in 10th overall with 8th place in A division for sophomore Samuel Williams (Summit, N.J.) and senior Sarah Freihofer (Etna, N.H.), and 12th in B Division for senior Matt Cohen (Milford, Conn.) and junior Alexandra Hiller (Pennington, N.J.). It was a pressure filled weekend for the Big Green. Dartmouth sat in between eighth and 12th throughout the competition and were always on the bubble of teams who could qualify.
With 10 nationally-ranked teams in the regatta (including Dartmouth at #19) and only eight spots at the semifinals, it became a tough regatta for the Big Green. Dartmouth was only 11 points behind eighth, out of a total of 310 points.
“The team sailed very hard in preparation for this event,” said co-head coach John Pearce, “and there are still several weekends of competition coming up for us to come back and have success.”
At the Womens Wick/Shrew Regatta at Coast Guard Academy, the Dartmouth women's sailors came away with second place, with a first-place finish in the A division for senior Becca Dellenbaugh (Easton, Conn.) and sophomore Rachel Moncton (Cupertino, Calif.) and fourth in the B division for freshman Chandler Salisbury (Lakewood, Ohio) and senior Steph Gagnon (Westerly, R.I.).
“This was a great finish, and is a good lead up before the Women's New England Champs next weekend at Brown, where the top seven teams will qualify for nationals,” said Pearce.
The last event came at the Oberg Trophy at Boston University and the Big Green finished third, with sixth place in A division for freshman David McClatchy (Annapolis, Md.) and junior Jenna Musco (Hope, R.I.), and second in B Division for freshmen John Renehan (Seattle, Wash.) and Molly Wilson (Rye, N.Y.).
