No. 47 Women's Tennis Downs Cornell in Ivy Opener

HANOVER, NH - The No. 47 Dartmouth women's tennis team kicked off its Ivy League schedule with a 5-2 victory over Cornell at the Boss Tennis Center today. The Big Green is now 14-2 (1-0 Ivy League), while Cornell, hot off a 4-3 win over Columbia, is 11-6 (1-1 Ivy League).

Dartmouth got off to a good start by clinching the doubles point in thrilling fashion. Senior Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.) and junior Molly Scott (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) won handily at No. 1, while freshman Sarah Leonard (Norwalk, Conn.) and sophomore Carissa King (Charlotte, N.C.) were edged 9-7 at No. 2. Senior co-captain Jesse Adler (Winnetka, Ill.) and junior Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) ultimately secured the doubles point for Dartmouth with a 9-7 victory at No. 3.

The Big Green then quickly got to work in singles, easily handling the Big Red's trio of freshmen in the top three spots. At No. 1 Scott won 6-2, 6-1 over Kristin Lim, sister of former Dartmouth player Robby Lim. Winingham was next off the court with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3. Leonard then sealed the victory for Dartmouth with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 over fellow New Englander Christine Ordway. Adler put another point on the board for the Green with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Natalia Sanchez, Cornell's former No. 1 player.

At No. 5, Smsyer came up against former top 50 USTA junior player, Susan Sullivan, who had taken her sophomore and junior year off from tennis. The crafty senior edged Smyser, and junior Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) fell to Ruxandra Dumitrescu at No. 6.

Dartmouth returns to action tomorrow at home against Columbia at 12 noon.
