HANOVER, NH - Sophomore Joe Sclafani (Palm City, Fla.) hit .500 in the weekend sweep of Yale to earn Ivy League Co-Player of the Week honors, while sophomore Cole Sulser (Santa Ysabel, Calif.) was selected as Pitcher of the Week after giving up just one run in 10 innings pitched.
The Dartmouth shortstop was rarely kept off the bases for the Big Green in five games this past week with a .632 on-base percentage while hitting .500 (7-for-14) with five walks. Sclafani hit safely in all five games and reached base at least twice in each contest.
In the first doubleheader against Yale, he stole three bases, more than he had all season. He scored once in a 7-4 win and two more times in the 8-2 victory. The reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year capped off the week by driving in both Dartmouth runs in regulation -- the second tying the game in the eighth -- as the Big Green went on to a 3-2, 10-inning triumph to finish off the series sweep over the Bulldogs.
Sulser was nearly untouchable during the week, pitching in three of the five games for a total of 10 innings while earning a win and a save. In each relief appearance he tossed 3.1 innings.
First against Holy Cross, the sophomore retired all 10 batters he faced with four strikeouts to earn his fifth victory of the year, tying for the league lead. In the second game of the weekend versus Yale, Sulser entered in the sixth with the bases loaded and two out as Dartmouth was clinging to a 6-3 lead. He quickly got a strikeout to end the threat, and finished off the 7-4 win for his third save, also tying him for the league lead. The next day he came back and pitched 3.1 more scoreless innings, allowing the Big Green to tie the score and go on to a 10-inning victory. For the week, Sulser gave up just one run on four hits and a walk in his 10 innings while striking out 11 for a 0.90 ERA.
The righthander leads the Big Green with a 3.26 earned run average and a perfect 5-0 record in 10 appearances and two starts. He has a great strikeout-to-walk ratio with only six walks, while fanning 42 batters in 38.2 innings. Sulser is also tied with junior Ryan Smith (Greenlawn, N.Y.) with three saves on the year.
