Freshmen Lead Dartmouth Women's Tennis at UVA Tourney

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Freshmen Melissa Matsuoka (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Rachel Decker-Sadowski (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led the Dartmouth women's tennis team at the University of Virgina Fall Invitational on the first day of competition, as both knocked off seeded players to reach the semifinal of the "D" flight.
Matsuoka easily won her first match against an opponent from Virginia Commonwealth University and then defeated top seed Kara Kucin from Marshall University 6-4, 6-2. Decker-Sadowski lost just two games against her first round opponent from the University of Virginia, and then downed No. 3 seed Steph MacFarlane of the University of North Carolina-Greensboro 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. The two Big Green players face each other in a semifinal match on Day Two.
Sophomore Jeri Reichel (Hilton Head, S.C.), also competing in the "D" Flight, won her first match easily over an opponent from the University of Utah before falling 6-4, 6-3 to Annette Rios of the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Reichel will next play Virginia's Rashmi Teltumbde in the fifth place bracket.
In the "A" singles flight, senior tri-captain Molly Scott (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) was edged in the first round 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 by Virginia's Hana Tomljanovic, who went on to upset the tournament's top seed, No. 34-ranked Martina Pavelec of Wake Forest. Scott, ranked No. 96 in the ITA pre-season national rankings, then fell in her back draw match to Marshall's Dominika Zaprazna.
In the "C" Flight senior tri-captain Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head, S.C.), was defeated in the first round by No. 3 seed Marjorie Baker of Virginia, while fellow senior captain Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Christina Danosi (New Albany, Ohio) both fell to opponents from North Carolina State.
