Dartmouth Field Hockey Readies for a Weekend of Play

HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team looks to continue its winning ways by hosting Penn and Maine this weekend at Chase Field. The Big Green is hoping to improve on its 6-1, 1-1 Ivy record with two games that count towards Ivy and/or Regional standings.

The first 50 students with their ID, through the gates at Chase Field on Saturday will get a free Dartmouth Nalgene bottle.

Thanks to victories over Brown and Holy Cross on Sept. 25 and 26, Dartmouth is enjoying its best season since 2001. With a 4-2 win over the Bears, the Big Green evened its Ivy record before shuting out the Cruasders the next day, earning the first shutout of the season.

Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) led her team in scoring with five goals and two assists over the two days and was named the Ivy League player of the Week. Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.) and Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) led in helpers with four and five, respectively. Netminder Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) was in goal against Holy Cross, making it her third career shutout.

Hood currently leads the Ivy League in shots and is second in points and goals scored. Peisch and McHenry are first and second in Ivy assists.

Dartmouth will square off with Penn in an Ivy League tilt on Saturday at 12:00 pm before taking on regional leader, Maine on Sunday at 2:00 pm.

Dartmouth and Penn began meeting on Sept. 24, 1977 with a 1-0 Quakers victory. When the series began, Penn won 13 of the first 20 meetings before the Big Green took five of the next seven. Recently Dartmouth has turned the tide with three wins out of the last five meetings. in 2009, the Big Green defeated the Quakers, 2-1 in double overtime.

Maine began the series with Dartmouth by taking a 1-0 win on Sept. 24, 1977. The two teams have gone back and forth recently as the Big Green won four straight games in the late 90's. Recently the Blackbears have surged forward in the series with four victories out of the last five meetings.
