Women's College Tennis Invitational - Day One

FLUSHING, N.Y. — The Dartmouth women's tennis team opened play at the 2011 USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Women's College Invitational on Saturday. The Big Green had five players compete in singles and one team playing in doubles.
In singles, three players moved on for Dartmouth winning their opening round matches. In the C Draw, freshman Akiko Okuda (Tenafly, N.J.) bested Marina Bykovskaya of Binghamton, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6. Freshman Theresa Smith (University Park, Fla.) defeated Alexandra Pavlovic of LIU in the D Draw, 6-4, 6-4. In the E Draw, freshman Janet Liu (Palo Alto, Calif.), the draw's three seed, beat Morgan Ivey of Rutgers, 6-3, 6-2.
Sophomore Rachel Decker-Sadowski (Santa Barbara, Calif.) lost in the first round of the F Draw to second-seeded Joan Cannon of Princeton, 5-7, 6-4, 10-7. In the I draw, senior Shelley Carpeni (New York, N.Y.) fell to Nimita Uberoi of Brown, 7-6(9), 7-6(5).
The duo of Liu and Decker-Sadowski moved into the semifinals of the C Draw in doubles. The combo defeated Diamond Adams and Nakita Austin of St. John's in the opening round and the third seed from Columbia, Ioana Alecsiu and Renata Arshavskaya, in the second round.
The invitational continues on Sunday.
