HANOVER, N.H. — After two scoreless periods on Wednesday, the Dartmouth women's hockey team and Harvard combined for three goals in the third, unfortunately the Crimson came out on top, 2-1, at Thompson Arena. The loss dropped the Big Green to 5-5-1 overall, 4-3-1 in ECAC Hockey and 2-1-0 in the Ivy League. The Crimson improved to 6-4-0, 6-2-0 in the ECAC and 1-2-0 in the Ancient Eight.
Early in the third period, Dartmouth broke the scoreless tie on a two-on-two break. Sophomore Ali Winkel (Espanola, Ontario) brought the puck across center ice with two Harvard defensemen dropping back on defense. Winkel left the puck for a trailing Kelly Foley (South Boston, Mass.), and the senior fired a shot that beat goaltender Laura Bellamy on her right side. It gave the Big Green a 1-0 lead on Foley's team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Dartmouth held the lead for 10 minutes, but Harvard finally broke through 12:52 into the third. Marissa Gedman slapped a shot from the left side, which sophomore Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.) blocked out in front of the crease. The Crimson's Elizabeth Parker was left unchecked and stuffed in the rebound to tie the contest. It marked Park's third goal of the season.
Just over a minute later, Harvard secured the game-winning goal. Kelsey Romantoski launched a shot from just inside the blue line, and Lyndsey Fry, standing three feet in front of the crease, deflected the puck and it sailed over Holdcroft's shoulder. It was Fry's fifth goal of the season. The Big Green put on the pressure to try to tie the game, including pulling Holdcroft for the final 1:24, but couldn't find the equalizer to send the contest to overtime.
Despite taking the loss, Holdcroft made outstanding save after outstanding save. She finished the game with 25, including 13 in the second period. Bellamy finished with 24 saves for the Crimson. Each team went 0-for-3 on the power play.
Dartmouth took 25 shots in the game. Senior Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alberta) had a team-high six shots for the Big Green. Harvard had 27 shots led by Gedman's five.
The loss ended a two-game winning streak for the Big Green, including a 3-2 victory at Harvard last Wednesday.
Dartmouth won't take the ice again until it plays at New Hampshire on Dec. 11 at 2 p.m.
