Women's Tennis Opens Play at 11th Annual Big Green Invite

HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's tennis team opened play at the 11th Annual Big Green Invite on Friday against UMass at the Alexis Boss Tennis Center and Gordon Pavilion. The Big Green were led by senior co-captain Shelley Carpeni (New York, N.Y.) and the team's three freshmen; Janet Liu (Palo Alto, Calif.), Akiko Okuda (Tenafly, N.J.), and Theresa Smith (University Park, Fla.)

Liu, Okuda, and Smith all won in straight sets over opponents from the University of Massachusetts, while Carpeni won a 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (6) battle against the Minutewomen's Chanel Glasper. Sophomore Rachel Decker-Sadowski (Santa Barbara, Calif.) was edged by Jessica Podlofsky of UMass 7-5, 6-4.

The Big Green swept the doubles, as junior co-captain Sarah Leonard (Norwalk, Conn.) and sophomore Sabrina Stewart (London, England) returned to action for the first time since being sidelined by injuries last spring. Leonard teamed with Okuda to win 8-6, while Stewart paired with Smith and cruised, 8-1. Liu and Decker-Sadowski, who have been playing together throughout the fall, won 8-5.

Dartmouth returns to the courts tomorrow at 1 p.m.
