LYME, N.H. — As on the first day of competition, the Dartmouth College ski team won both the men's and women's cross country events, but Vermont was able to come away with the team title at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival with 1002 points. Sophomore
Sam Tarling (Cumberland, Maine) won the men's 20K classic for the Big Green, while the women enjoyed four of the top-six finishers in the 15K classic.
Tarling barely edged out a teammate and a Catamount in the 20K. He and junior
Eric Packer (Anchorage, Alaska) approached the finish line of the 20K neck and neck. Yesterday, Tarling won the 10K freestyle race by 11 seconds over Packer, but this time won merely by a nose with a time of 1:00:31.3, just one-tenth of a second ahead of his teammate. Both had to keep an eye on Vermont's Franz Bernstein who was right on their heels, placing third at 1:00:32.7 — 1.4 seconds off the pace. Senior
Nils Koons (Sidney, Maine) took fourth for Dartmouth at 1:01:03.4 as the Green posted 138.0 points, while Vermont took second in the event with 118.0.
In the women's 15K classic, Caitlin Patterson of Vermont outdistanced the competition by more than 30 seconds with a time of 51:54.6. But Dartmouth skied in a pack with four of the next five finishers Big Green skiers. Senior Rosie Brennan (Park City, Utah) came in second overall at 52:28.8 with freshman
Annie Hart (Stillwater, Minn.) close behind in third at 52:32.0. New Hampshire's Clare Egan snuck into the middle of the pack to place fourth, following by junior
Stephanie Crocker (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and junior
Erika Flowers (Bozeman, Mont.) in fifth and sixth, respectively. Thanks to the strong team effort, Dartmouth took the event with 130.0 points with Vermont in second (117.0).
The order of the two teams was reversed in the women's slalom with the Catamounts outscoring Dartmouth, 129.0-105.0. Big Green sophomore
Annie Rendall (South Burlington, Vt.) posted the fastest first run of the day at 51.10 seconds, but Vermont's Kate Ryley zipped her way down the slopes in 48.56 seconds on the second run, narrowly passing Rendall with a combined time of 1:40.01, just a tenth of a second faster. Senior
Courtney Hammond (Mercer Island, Wash.) was the other top-10 finisher for Dartmouth, posting a time of 1:41.52, good for sixth.
