HANOVER, N.H. — There's having your backs against the wall, and then there is what happened to the Dartmouth women's hockey team on Sunday at Thompson Arena. The team scored a shorthanded goal with 54 seconds remaining in the third period to send the game to overtime, and scored the game-winning goal 18:37 in the first overtime for a 4-3 win. The victory improved the Big Green to 21-10-0 and dropped Clarkson to 14-17-6.
The Big Green trailed, 3-2, late in the third period in a game they had to win to continue their season. Junior Moira Scanlon (Chicago, Ill.) committed a five-minute major penalty with 3:47 to go to leave Dartmouth down a skater for the rest of the third period. After pulling their goaltender to even the skaters back to five-on-five, the Big Green went on the attack.
Sophomore Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.) took a shot that was blocked, but ended up on senior Amanda Trunzo's (Andover, Minn.) stick. Trunzo made a quick pass to a cutting Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alta.) who fired in the shorthanded game-tying goal with 54 seconds remaining. It marked Fischer's ninth goal of the season. Neither team scored in the remaining time to push the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, Dartmouth was extremely aggressive taking 19 shots compared to only one by the Golden Knights. Clarkson's Erica Howe made save after save and it looked like the two teams were headed for a second overtime. But the Golden Knights committed their second penalty of the extra frame and the Big Green used the power play to their advantage.
With under two minutes remaining, sophomore Margaux Sharp (Carleton Place, Ont.) fired a shot from the blueline that was blocked by a diving Clarkson defenseman. The puck ricocheted to Dumais who slapped the shot into the net for the game-winning goal. Dumais now has 16 goals on the season and it was her second goal of the contest.
The first period went back and forth without either team gaining an advantage. The opening goal happened one minute into the second period when junior Jenna Hobeika (Alpine, N.J.) fluttered a shot past Howe. The Golden Knights responded two minutes later to tie the game off the stick of Carly Mercer. The Big Green regained the lead midway through the period on a goal by Dumais. Clarkson scored the next two goals in the game with its final goal coming with 3:18 left in the second period. The Dartmouth defense held the Golden Knights scoreless the rest of the game, which spanned 41:55 minutes.
Dumais finished the game with three points on two goals and an assist. Trunzo led the team in assists with two. Holdcroft made 29 saves in the contest to improve her season record to 17-7-0. Dartmouth improved to 3-1 in overtime games this season, and avenged an overtime loss to Clarkson back in January. It was the first overtime game in the ECAC tournament for the Big Green since 2009 when they lost to Colgate, 7-6. The last time Dartmouth won in overtime in the tournament was in 2001 in a 3-2 victory over Brown.
Dartmouth advances to the semifinals at Harvard on Thursday. The Crimson swept the season series, but the two teams have not played since November.
