HANOVER, N.H. — Two Dartmouth women's squash players earned postseason honors as senior Hannah Conant and sophomore Valeria Wiens were named All-Ivy while Wiens was also a second-team All-America honoree. The league award is the first for Conant and the second consecutive for Wiens.
Having two earn All-Ivy honors in the same year is the first for the Big Green since the 1977-78 season and Wiens' second consecutive honor is the first since Sascha Greatrex earned back-to-back first team honors in 1992-93 and 1993-94.
Conant spent most of the season mainly at the No. 2 spot in the Big Green lineup. She posted a 9-8 record on the season getting as far as the consolation quarterfinals of the Ramsay Division of the CSA Individual National Championships.
"I am really happy for Hannah," Coach Wiens said. "It's a nice way for her to finish her college career. Although she won only two Ivy matches during the year, the league's coaches seem to recognize how much she has contributed to collegiate squash throughout her four years here and wanted to reward her for that."
Wiens was the No. 1 player for the Big Green where she earned a 12-5 record and made it as far as the consolation semifinals of the Ramsay Division in the individual championships. Wiens also earned All-America honors for the second year in a row and is the first Dartmouth player to ever be named All-America twice.
To be named an All-American, a player must rank in the top 20 nationally and compete in the Individual National Championships. The first 10 players earn First-Team All-America honors, with the next 10 being named to the second team.
"Valeria did not stop when the 2009-10 season ended, instead she worked harder in preparation of the upcoming year with the aim of finishing in the top-three nationally," said head coach Hansi Wiens. "Because of investing all that hard work she played well throughout the season and was ranked constantly in the top eight. She beat the third-ranked player along the way and ended with a great season. She is an extremely dedicated athlete who has improved her game immensely and it is obvious that all the other coaches recognize this by giving her this honor."
