ERIN, WIS. — It came down to the final two holes, but Peter Williamson's (Hanover, N.H.) run for the U.S. Amateur title came to an end on Thursday. Blake Biddle defeated the Dartmouth senior in match play, 2-up, at Erin Hills in the second round of the match play portion of the USGA U.S. Amateur Championship.
Williamson trailed for almost the entire match, but came back from a 3-up deficit to square the match on the 14th hole. Biddle regained a 1-up lead after a birdie on the 15th, but Williamson responded by taking the 16th hole to return the match to all square. The momentum swung back in Biddle's favor when he claimed the 17th with a par to Williamson's bogey. Needing to win the par-5 18th to extend the match, Williamson bogeyed the last hole to give Biddle the 2-up victory.
Biddle jumped out to an early lead by winning the opening hole. He went on to win two of the next three holes to gain a 3-up advantage. Williamson worked to even the contest by winning four the next eight holes to square the match after the 14th.
Williamson entered the match-play portion of the championship in the 34th spot after a 2-under-par 140 after two stroke play rounds. He defeated Mackenzie Hughes in the first round, 1-up. Biddle was seeded second after firing an 8-under-par 134 during stroke play. He beat Marty Jeppensen II, 5 and 3, in the opening round.
The Dartmouth men's golf season begins competing at the McLaughlin on Sept. 15-17.
