MIDDLETOWN, R.I. — The Dartmouth men's golf team is in ninth place after the first day of the 18th Annual Adams Cup. The event features 19 teams and 95 golfers. The Big Green shot a 592 through two rounds at the Newport National Golf Club, a 7,244 yard par-72 course. Junior James Pleat (Nashua, N.H.) and senior Peter Williamson (Hanover, N.H.) are each tied for sixth place with a 142.
Georgia, the defending national champions, had the two lowest rounds of the day. The Bulldogs posted a 564 team score, giving them the team lead through 36 holes. UCF, the defending Adams Cup team champion, is in second with a 567. Texas Tech is in third place after shooting a 579.
For Dartmouth, Pleat shot a 70 in the first round and a 72 in the second. Williamson shot a two-over-par 74 in the opening round, but rebounded with a four-under-par 68 in the second round. Daniel Knight, freshman Charlie Edler (Fair Haven, N.J.) and junior Andrew Jankowski (Elkins, N.H.) joined the duo to score for the Big Green.
The Adams Cup of Newport is a two-day, 54-hole tournament. The first two rounds of play were held on at Newport National Golf Club, while the final 18 holes will be played at Carnegie Abbey Club on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
