HANOVER, N.H. - Three goals in a three-minute span early on was the major difference in the Dartmouth field hockey team's 6-1 win over Holy Cross Sunday afternoon at Chase AstroTurf Field. Senior Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) scored the first of her two goals in the game in that time and helped the Big Green (6-2) push their current win streak to four.
After the Crusaders (1-8) seized some of the early momentum, Everett and freshmen Ali Savage (Orange, New South Wales, Australia) and Janine Leger (Johannesburg, South Africa) followed with tallies in just over three minutes of action.
Everett's first goal came on a pretty feed from Savage on a 2-on-1 rush up field. Savage then scored one of her own just 1:38 later when she slid into the circle to deflect senior Kelly Hood's (Berlin, N.H.) try on a penalty corner. Leger finally closed out the run with her second of the season on a pass from junior Lisa Masini (Ann Arbor, Mich.) that the first-year Big Green player was able to redirect over the Holy Cross keeper.
Everett added her second of the half with eight minutes remaining to give her team the 4-0 at the midway point.
Much like the scoring spurt seen in the first half, Dartmouth's offense scored two goals less than a minute apart early in the second. Sophomore Maggie Scanlon (Shaker Heights, Ohio) picked up her first of the 2011 season and the second of her career 6:49 into the period. Masini pushed a pass between two Holy Cross defenders to a sprinting Scanlon nearing the top of the circle. The Dartmouth sophomore slipped her shot through the Crusaders' goalkeeper for the 5-0 lead.
It wasn't long before it was 6-0 as Masini scored her first of the game and second of the season just 57 seconds later. A set play on a penalty corner allowed Masini to slide into the lower portion of the box unnoticed after starting the play from the end line. After a stop at the top of the circle and a pass to Hood, the senior captain found Masini alone down low at the left side of the cage for the quick, open shot and the six-goal lead.
Holy Cross was able to finally score as Megan Bourne took advantage of a penalty corner to make it 6-1 with 13 minutes left. But it was too late as the Big Green ran out the clock on the game to take the victory.
Dartmouth used all three goalkeepers in the game with senior Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) making five saves to earn the win. Junior Jenna Stearns (Thornton, N.H.) started the second half with freshman Ellen Meyer (Prospect, Ky.) playing the final 20 minutes.
The Big Green held a 28-9 advantage in shots, while also taking 12 penalty corners to the Crusaders' four.
After playing six of its first eight games on at home, Dartmouth will head out on the road this week for two games. The first comes Wednesday when they travel to take on Vermont at 2 p.m. in Burlington. Saturday will have the team in Philadelphia to play Penn in a noon Ivy League matchup.
