HANOVER, N.H. — The 10th-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team fell to third-ranked Cornell on Saturday, 1-0, at Thompson Arena, when the Big Red scored with 59 second left in overtime to earn the victory.
Cornell took advantage of its sixth power play of the night to score the game-winning goal with time winding down in the extra period. The Big Red gained control of the puck at center ice with senior Chelsea Karpenko picking it up on the near side and crossing the ice toward the benches with the puck.
She passed it over to junior Laura Fortino in front of the Cornell bench. Fortino brought it past the blue line into the Dartmouth zone and then made a centering pass to senior Erin Barley-Maloney who slipped behind the Big Green defense. Barley-Maloney was one-on-one with sophomore Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and beat her low and to the right to end the game.
The loss dropped the Big Green to 12-6-2 overall, 8-4-2 in ECAC Hockey and 2-2-1 in the Ivy League. The Big Red improved to 18-2-0 overall, 13-1-0 in the conference and 7-1-0 in the Ancient Eight. The loss ended an eight-game unbeaten streak for Dartmouth, which was its longest since the 2007-08 season.
It appeared the Big Green had taken a 1-0 lead with just over eight minutes to go in the second period on a goal by senior Erica Dobos (Bethel Park, Pa.), but after replay review the goal was waved off. The referee originally ruled that the puck had crossed the line, but after looking at the video, reversed his decision, stating that the Cornell goaltender Amanda Mazzotta covered the puck before it crossed and then was pushed over the line.
In the first period, the Big Red were the more aggressive team, taking 14 shots to Dartmouth's seven, but the Big Green outshot Cornell the rest of the way. Dartmouth finished the game with 31 shots compared to 24 for the Big Red.
Dartmouth committed six penalties in the game and Cornell had five. The Big Green went 0-for-5 on the power play with Cornell finishing 1-for-6. Despite taking the loss, Holdcroft kept the Big Green in the contest with her 23 saves. She had help from the Dartmouth defense, which blocked 16 shots. Junior Margaux Sharp (Carleton Place, Ontario), Dobos and junior Sally Komarek (Minneapolis, Minn.) all tied for the team lead with three blocked shots.
It was only the second time this season Cornell has scored one goal in a game. The previous came in a 1-0 victory at home against Princeton.
Dartmouth heads out on the road next weekend when it takes on Brown (Friday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.) and Yale (Saturday, Jan. 28 at 4 p.m.) for the first time this season.
