Game 9
Dartmouth (4-2-2, 3-2-1 ECAC Hockey, 3-1-0 Ivy) at
Harvard (7-1-0, 6-0-0 ECAC Hockey, 4-0-0 Ivy)
Friday, Nov. 30 - 7 PM
Cambridge, Mass. - Bright Hockey Center (2,850)
WHAT'S ON TAP?
The Big Green make the annual trip down to Cambridge for a Friday night meeting
with No. 5 Harvard with game time slated for 7 p.m. Dartmouth is playing its
first contest away from Thompson Arena in nearly a month as it wrapped up a
four-game homestand last weekend with a 2-2 tie against Colgate.
FRIDAY'S GAME
The match-up with the Crimson should prove a solid test for
the Green as they look to get back on track following an 0-1-1 home weekend
with Cornell and Colgate in the days following Thanksgiving. Harvard currently
leads the Ivy League with a perfect 4-0 mark and is second in ECAC Hockey with
12 points (6-0-0). The Green and White are currently sixth in the league standings
with seven points on the strength of a 3-2-1 record.
REGULATION? NO THANKS
Dartmouth's last three games (0-1-2) have all needed
overtime. So far in the entire month of November (6 games), the Big Green have
played four overtime contests (1-1-2), including a 5-4 win at Yale on Nov. 2.
In the two contests that did not need the extra period, Dartmouth was 2-0,
defeating Brown, 1-0, on Nov. 3 and New Hampshire, 3-2, on Nov. 6.
ONE-GOAL GAMES
So far this month, the Big Green have taken to the ice against six
opponents. In all six games, the teams either played to a draw or the score was
separated by just one goal. The team edged out three straight one-goal games to
start off November before ties with No. 5 Boston College and Colgate sandwiched
a 2-1 overtime loss to No. 2 Cornell.
DUAL PASSERS
Against Colgate, both Big Green goals had a similar look on the scoresheet.
It wasn't the player that finished the play that was alike on each, but rather
the two members of the team that set up the goals. On each, senior defenseman
Margaux Sharp and freshman forward Laura Stacey were credited with helpers.
Sharp had the primary assist on both tallies, while Stacey earned her
team-leading sixth and seventh assists of the year against the Raiders.
KNACK OF IT
This season, senior captain Reagan Fischer has a knack of
finding the back of the net when her team needs it the most. In both of the
team's ties, it was a Fischer goal that forced the draw. Against BC, it was a
wrist shot from the circle in the final minutes to send the game to overtime,
while most recently, the Irma, Alberta, native tied the game 11:47 into the
second period against Colgate that eventually helped Dartmouth earn the
hard-fought point in the league standings.
LOTS OF 'ONES' IN
THIS ONE
It took until the seventh game of the season, but senior Sally Komarek
finally got on the scoreboard with her first goal of the season against
Colgate. Finishing off a play from Sharp and Stacey, Komarek tied the game at
1-1 with just 1:11 remaining in the first period. It was her first goal since Feb. 17, 2012
when her fourth tally of the year made it 7-1 midway through the second period
against Yale.
SCOUTING HARVARD
One of the top teams in the country, the fifth-ranked Crimson are led
offensively by senior Jillian Dempsey and her 17 points. Her eight goals and
nine assists are also team-leading figures in 2012-13. Dempsey (sister of Big
Green men's forward, Connor) is fourth in the nation with 2.12 points per game
this season. In the defensive zone, the goaltending duo of Laura Bellamy and
Emerance Maschmeyer have been outstanding so far as both boast a 0.75
goals-against average and save percentages above.950. The Crimson are now 7-1-0
overall after a Wednesday night road win at non-conference and ninth-ranked
Northeastern, 3-1.
HOLDING DOWN THE FORT
Junior goaltender Lindsay Holdcroft did her part last weekend as she held
opponents to just two goals apiece. Playing a combined 128:38 of action against
No. 2 Cornell and Colgate, the Pittsburgh native stopped 51-of-55 shots she
faced, including 28 against the Big Red. Her goals-against average dropped from
2.41 to 2.23 in the two games.
2011-12 vs. THE
CRIMSON
These two teams split the season-series with one another in 2011-12 as each won
once in the other's building. Dartmouth went to Cambridge on Nov. 23 and came
out 3-2 winners in the first meeting. Harvard returned the favor a week later
on Nov. 30, handing the Big Green a 2-1 loss in Thompson.
AGAINST HARVARD
Overall, Dartmouth is 44-37-3 all-time against Harvard, but is just 7-13-1
against the Crimson since head coach Mark Hudak took over the program in
2003-04.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The meeting with Harvard on Friday marks the first of an eight-game road
trip that will stretch the course of 42 days through a Jan. 9 contest in
Burlington at Vermont.
COMING UP
Following the match-up with Harvard, Dartmouth will head
back to Boston next week for a Wednesday night tilt at Northeastern. A two-game
series at Maine (Dec. 8-9) and a New Year's Eve matinee at Providence round out
2012 for the Big Green.
CENTURY CLUB
The tie with Colgate marked the 100th time that Sharp and fellow senior Camile
Dumais wore the Dartmouth uniform in game action. Joining Fischer (106) and
Jenna Hobeika (109), Sharp notched two points in her 100th career game, while
Dumais had two shots on goal. It won't take long for another player to join the
club as Friday's tilt at the Bright Hockey Center will be the 100th for senior
defenseman Sasha Nanji. Three other Big Green players are approaching the
milestone and have played 90 or more games.
