FLUSHING, N.Y. – Three members of the Dartmouth men's tennis competed in the qualifying draws of the 2014 United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships on Thursday afternoon. Junior Max Schmidt went 1-1 in his singles matches and freshman Aman Agarwal dropped a close match to his opponent from Stony Brook. Fellow freshman Max Fliegner was victorious in both of his matches and will move on to the main draw tomorrow.
The Big Green will join collegiate players from all over the Northeast region at the Billie Jean King National Center to take part in one of the most competitive events of the fall season. Play will run through Tuesday, Oct. 21.
In the first qualifying round, Fliegner had an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory over Mitchell Peterson of Lehigh, while Schmidt had to battle to best Caison Best of Army, dropping the first set, 7-6, before coming back to win the final two, 6-4, 6-4. Agarwal remained close to Stony Brook's Raphael Termat, but ultimately fell by a score of 6-4, 6-3.
Fliegner had a 6-4, 6-2 win over Wagner's Ryan Khan in the second round to remain undefeated on the day and secure a spot in the main draw, which will commence tomorrow. Schmidt and Freddy Ruiz of St. John's (N.Y.) were evenly matched, wrapping up the first set with a score of 7-6 in favor of Ruiz. In the second set, the opponent was able to pull out a 6-2 victory to take the match.
“I was happy to see Max Fliegner take another positive step this fall after his successful tournament at Brown two weeks ago,” said assistant coach Tom Boysen. “Today was another step in the right direction for him. I am excited to see him play in the main draw. Max Schmidt battled through his first-round match and played his best tennis at the end. We continue to show our toughness and resolve at every tournament.
In the main draw tomorrow, Fliegner will join fellow Big Green teammates Chis Kipouras, Dovydas Sakinis, Diego Pedraza, George Wall and Ciro Riccardi in both singles and doubles action.
