Field Hockey Falls in Ivy League Contest, 3-1, at Columbia

NEW YORK – The Dartmouth field hockey team saw its three-game win streak against Ivy League opponents snapped on Sunday afternoon as it fell, 3-1, at Columbia.

The Big Green dropped out of the four-way tie for first place in the Ancient Eight standings with the loss, falling to 3-2 in conference play and 5-9 overall. The Lions remain one of the teams atop the leaderboard at 4-1 in league and 11-5 overall.

Freshman Anna Ewasechko scored the lone goal of the game for the home team, netting her second of the season in the 48thth minute. But, by then, the Lions had already built their lead to 3-0 after tallies from Zoe Blake (7th), Whitney Hartstone (16th) and Christina Freibott (27th).

Junior Eliza Becker set up the Ewasechko marker and was credited with the assist.

Senior goalkeeper Ellen Meyer was once again tested often on Sunday, stopping 13 shots in what eventually shaped up to be a losing effort. At the other end, the duo of Kimberly Pianucci (9 saves) and Marlee Silverstein (0 saves) played and benefited from three defensive saves from defenders.

The home team held a 24-20 edge in shots and a 14-9 advantage in penalty corners.

Dartmouth return to action Saturday, Nov. 1 against Harvard in the home finale of the 2014 season. The two teams will square off at Chase Field at 1 p.m.
