CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Playing its first Ivy League rival of the 2014-15 season, the Dartmouth women's hockey team fell to No. 7/10 Harvard in the Bright-Landry Hockey Center by a score of 4-1 on Tuesday evening. The Big Green dipped to 4-4-0 and 2-3-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Crimson improved to 4-2-2 and 3-1-1 in conference action.
Freshman Brooke Ahbe scored Dartmouth's lone goal of the night and her first collegiate marker, tying the game at one just minutes after Harvard's Miye D'Oench opened scoring early in the first period. Junior Catherine Berghuis earned the assist and, like Ahbe, ended the day with a point.
“I thought we played a good game, but not a great game,” head coach Mark Hudak said. “In order to beat teams like Harvard and BU, we need to play a little bit better. But, I think we continue to improve and we are looking forward to the next games.”
In the opening minutes of play, sophomore Robyn Chemago and Emerance Maschmeyer were kept busy as both teams aggressively tried to get on the board first; the two netminders stopped a total of 10 shots in less than seven minutes. Following a Dartmouth penalty, Michelle Picard shot the puck just centimeters under a Green defender's stick and the attempt was saved by Chemago's left kneepad, only to deflect onto the stick of D'Oench, who pocketed it neatly into the ride side of the net at 7:40.
Four minutes later, the Upper Valley squad tied things up in much the same fashion. Berghuis fired at the net out near the blueline, but was thwarted by Maschmeyer's kneepads, sending the puck to the right of the net. Ahbe acted quickly, knocking the puck into the cage to score her first goal in a Big Green jersey.
Throughout the first 20 minutes of action, Chemago had an impressive 14 saves, while Maschmeyer stopped seven shots.
Less than a minute into the second period, D'Oench was back in action in hopes of scoring goal number two, but the shot hit the left pipe instead. After taking nine straight shots, five of which were stopped by the Big Green's sophomore goalie, Hilary Crowe found the back of the net at 9:38 for the third time this season to give the Crimson a one-goal edge once again.
Harvard tried to increase the lead further with three consecutive shots, but senior Karlee Odland and sophomore Kennedy Ottenbreit managed to block them. To end the period, Odland and sophomore Eleni Tebano took a pair of shots apiece at the Harvard cage and both had one blocked and one saved by Maschmeyer before time expired.
Junior Laura Stacey started the third period by firing directly at the net just 20 seconds in, but the shot bounced off Maschmeyer and out of harm. Sophomore Emma Korbs had a chance at a goal three minutes later, but the puck was pushed to the right of the net by the goalie. Just a few seconds later at 4:49, Haley Mullins scored Harvard's third goal of the evening with the help of Mary Parker.
With 3:04 remaining in the final stanza, Harvard's Sarah Edney snuck the puck into the cage to give the home team a three-goal advantage. Each team took a handful of shots, but the game ended soon after that final goal.
The Crimson outshot the Green, 69-47 (42-28 shots on goal). Chemago had a career-high 38 saves, while Maschmeyer, who won her first game of the year, stopped 27 shots.
The Green and White will return to Hanover for three consecutive games. On Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5-6, Dartmouth will host No. 4/4 Quinnipiac and Princeton. On Wednesday, Dec. 10, No. 1 Boston College will come to town for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
