HANOVER, N.H. –A goal by sophomore Eleni Tebano with three minutes left in the third stanza of the game against No. 4/4 Quinnipiac tied the score at four and sent the game to overtime, a first this season for the Big Green. Both goalies had impressive saves throughout the final 10 minutes of play, preventing either team from scoring, and the game ended in a tie.
Dartmouth is now 4-4-1 and 2-3-1 in ECAC Hockey play, while Quinnipiac has a mark of 13-0-3 and 6-0-2 in conference action.
The last time the Big Green tied a ranked opponent was on Nov. 12, 2012 against Boston College, which came down to a three-all draw.
"I think we started a little slow, but we adjusted well to the pressure that Quinnipiac was putting on us," head coach Mark Hudak said. I am really excited about the grit we played with in the third period to tie up the game."
Sophomore Kennedy Ottenbreit had a big day for the Big Green, scoring the first two goals and adding a helper on another, ending the day with three points.
As she did on Tuesday against Harvard, sophomore netminder Robyn Chemago had a barrage of shots sent her way in quick succession early on in the period, saving four shots within the first four minutes. At 4:56, the Bobcats' Erica Uden Johansson netted her eighth of the season following a quick pass from Shiann Darkangelo.
Dartmouth took advantage of the Quinnipiac penalty at 8:46, scoring a man-up goal at 10:32. Situated directly in front of the net, sophomore Ailish Forfar backhanded the puck to classmate Emma Korbs, who took a shot at a goal herself, but it was Ottenbreit standing to the right of the net who finished the sequence, tapping the puck behind goalie Chelsea Laden's left foot. Ottenbreit almost scored her second marker of the night two minutes later, but Laden was able to stop the attempt.
With the score knotted at one, the second period proved to be eventful. Just over a minute after returning to the ice, Emma Greco took a pointblank shot at Dartmouth's net, but a sliding save by Chemago kept the score tied. At 5:43, Dartmouth took the lead, albeit short-lived, when Ottenbreit found the back of the net, once again, skating behind the cage to dump it in the right side with the help of junior Laura Stacey to score the Green and White's second power play goal of the night. Just over a minute later at 6:57, Quinnipiac's Meghan Turner evened the score, flicking the puck into the cage after taking a shot from beside the right pipe.
The tie was broken minutes later, this time by the opponent, when Uden Johansson received the puck soon after a faceoff and found the back of the net for the second time this evening. The Upper Valley squad showed no mercy on Laden during the final seconds of the second period, firing five consecutive shots at the net, but only one needed to be saved.
Just over 30 ticks, into the third stanza, a tangle of Dartmouth players set up camp outside Quinnipiac's net in hopes of scoring goal number three. Junior Lindsay Allen took the first shot to the right of the cage, but the puck was deflected onto the stick of Ottenbreit, who tried her luck at another goal, but that, too, was stopped by Laden. Finally, on the third Big Green attempt, junior Morgan Illikainen, who was standing to the goalie's direct right, was able to push the puck into the center of the net before falling between the pipes herself.
This tie, like all the others so far, did not last long, as Kosta pocketed the Bobcats' fourth marker of the night at 6:52. Quinnipiac took control of the puck and fired five shots in quick succession, four of which had to be saved by Chemago. With three and a half minutes remaining in the third, Tebano scored the equalizer and her first of the year, sending the game to overtime.
Less than a minute into overtime, senior Karlee Odland had a chance at ending the game, shooting straight at Laden, but the goalie was able to save it. Stacey, too, tried her hand at a goal, but Laden had a nice save that sent the puck flying to the right. A combined total of eight shots were taken during the final 10 minutes of action, but the game ultimately ended in a tie.
Quinnipiac outshot Dartmouth, 33-25 and Laden ended the night with 21 saves, while Chemago stopped 29 attempts.
The Big Green will return to the ice tomorrow at 4 p.m. when they host Princeton.
