HANOVER, N.H. – The day after tying No. 4/4 Quinnipiac, 4-4, the Dartmouth women's hockey team was defeated by Princeton by a score of 5-2 on a snowy Saturday afternoon.
The Green dipped to 4-5-1 and 2-4-1 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Tigers improved to 7-7-1 and 5-4-0 in conference action.
"I thought we played a decent first period," head coach Mark Hudak said. "I thought the second period was good too, but I was disappointed with how we played in the third period."
For the fifth game in a row, the opponent struck first, scoring the first goal at 3:43 in the opening period. The Tigers' Kelsey Koelzer picked up the puck near center ice and skated freely down the right, making it through Dartmouth's defenders to find the back of the net for an unassisted mark.
Soon after the first goal was scored, the Big Green wreaked havoc on Princeton's netminder, Kimberly Newell, taking shot after shot in hopes of equalizing the score. Junior Lindsey Allen had three promising attempts, but Newell stopped a pair and another was blocked by a Princeton player who just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
With just three ticks remaining on the clock, Jaimie McDonell picked up a puck meant to for a player in green and dumped it in Dartmouth's net, bouncing off sophomore goalie Robyn Chemago's left glove before finding its place in the center of the cage at 19:37.
Just 1:04 after returning to the ice for the second period, the Green and White capitalized on a Princeton penalty and lessened the opponent's lead to one. Sophomore Ailish Forfar pocketed her second goal of the season from directly outside the net following passes from classmates Olivia Whitford and Emma Korbs.
Unlike the first period, the puck spent the majority of the second deep in Princeton territory. The Big Green outshot the Tigers, 16-7, with nine of Dartmouth's shots being on target, but the opponent's impressive goalie was able to keep the score at 2-1 in their advantage. At 14:32, senior Karlee Odland fired at the net from far to the right, but Ali Pankowski thwarted the attempt. Odland picked up the rebound and dumped it in behind Newell to tie the score at two.
The third period was a strong one, but not for the home team. Just 23 seconds in, McDonell returned to score goal number two, backhanding the puck into the cage with the help of Molly Contini and Hilary Lloyd. A minute and a half later, Audrey Potts potted the puck, and herself, into the right side of the net, with assists going to Morgan Sly and Emily Achterkirch.
With a 4-2 lead, Potts scored her second of the afternoon after receiving a behind-the-net pass from Sly and Kiersten Falck at 8:14 to further increase the lead. A combined total of 11 shots were taken in the final minutes of play, but time expired before Dartmouth was able to find the back of the net again.
Dartmouth outshot Princeton, 50-35, and Chemago had 26 saves compared to Newell's 16.
The Big Green will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 10 when it hosts No. 1 Boston College at 7 p.m.
