BOSTON, Mass. – Closing out the 2014 portion of the season with its second of six consecutive road games, the Dartmouth women's hockey team came from behind to defeat Northeastern, 5-1, on New Year's Eve in historic Matthews Arena, courtesy of four goals in the third period.
The Green now has won two straight, after a 6-2 victory at Vermont on Dec. 14. They improved to 6-6-1, while the Huskies fell to 6-9-3. This is the first time since the 2011-12 season that a game between Dartmouth and Northeastern has not gone to overtime. This is also the first time since Nov. 26, 2011 that the Green and White have had a win against the Huskies.
Junior Lindsey Allen and senior Karlee Odland led the team with two goals apiece, while fellow senior Morgan Illikainen scored the game-winner, giving Dartmouth its first lead of the game early in the final stanza.
“I thought both teams started slow, but we smoothed things out in the second,” head coach Mark Hudak said. “We did a lot of little things right in the third, especially defensively, which gave us the opportunity for good transitions and for the offense to play out.”
Dartmouth started things off with the upper hand, forcing goalie Chloe Desjardins to make moves early in the period to stop the Big Green from scoring. The Huskies, however, turned things around and, with just six seconds remaining on the power play following a Green penalty, Northeastern's Hayley Scamurra took advantage of the extra skater and shot the puck past sophomore Robyn Chemago to put the home team on the board first, connecting with Colleen Murphy and Denisa Krizova at 7:41. Even outshooting the opponent, 25-15, Dartmouth was not able to get past Desjardins.
At 6:41 in the second, the opponent's Jordan Krause almost increased the lead to two when her shot hit the left pipe. With Desjardins being on point, the Green took multiple shots at Northeastern's net and outshot the Huskies, 28-11, only to be stymied each time. With 44 seconds remaining in the period, Allen picked up her team-leading 11th marker of the season from right outside the cage following passes from sophomores Kennedy Ottenbreit and Emma Korbs, knotting the score at one heading into the third stanza.
The third period was huge for the Upper Valley squad, who scored three times within the first two and half minutes. Illikainen gave Dartmouth its first lead of the game just 48 seconds in following a Northeastern penalty that had carried over from the previous period, with assists going to Ottenbreit and sophomore Eleni Tebano. Eleven seconds later, Odland picked up a pass from sophomore Katy Ratty, flicking the puck past Desjardins.
At 2:10, Allen was back at it, scoring an unassisted short-handed goal to give Dartmouth a 4-1 edge. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Odland fired to the left of Desjardins to further increase the Big Green's lead with another unassisted tally to close out scoring.
Overall, Dartmouth outshot Northeastern, 75-42. Chemago ended up with 19 saves, while Desjardins stopped 21 attempts.
The Big Green has a busy weekend against conference rivals ahead, first traveling to Connecticut to face Yale at 7 p.m. on Friday before heading to Rhode Island for a 4 p.m. puck drop against Brown the following day.
