PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Having opened the 2014-15 season almost a month ago and not competed since, the Dartmouth men's swimming and diving team returned to the water on Friday for day one of the three-day, six-session Brown Invitational. The Big Green posted some strong swims throughout the day, finishing as high as second in a handful of events. They are currently sitting in fourth with 193 points.
The team from the Upper Valley opened the first day of finals by coming in fifth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:22.68. The A relay, composed of freshmen Tony Shen and Brandon Boval, senior Ian Woon and junior Aaron Athanas, out-touched Rider's A relay by less than a second. Dartmouth's B relay came in ninth in 1:25.23.
Freshman Bruno Korbar dropped three seconds and moved up three places from the preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle to finish in third place with a time of 4:32.71, while junior Logan Briggs improved to a 4:33.05 to take fifth. In the 200-yard IM, Athanas placed second with a time of 1:48.82, finishing a second behind Corey Okubo of Princeton and just a tenth of a second in front of the Tigers' Marco Bove. Freshman Henry Senkfor touched in eighth in 1:54.65. Boval and fellow freshman Misha Tovmashenko competed in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing in 14th and 19th with times of 21.05 and 21.38, respectively.
On the 1-meter diving board, Senior Ryan Shelley moved up from seventh in prelims to fourth in finals with his score of 293.65. This morning, junior Brett Gillis placed 11th with a score of 232.45.
Dartmouth wrapped things up on a high note by taking second in the 400-yard medley relay. Made up of junior James Verhagen, senior Jay Schulte, sophomore David Harmon, and Woon, the A relay finished with a time of 3:17.28, leaving over two seconds between it and third-place Brown with a 3:19.85. Princeton took the event in 3:14.61.
Day two of the Invite will commence at 11:00 a.m. with the 400-yard IM.
