PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Dartmouth men's swimming and diving team had a strong second day at the Brown Invitational on Saturday, placing first in two events. The Big Green 800-yard freestyle relay finished with a time of 6:39.96, touching just two-tenths of a second ahead of Princeton's relay, and junior James Verhagen won the 100-yard backstroke with a 48.74. Dartmouth remains fourth in the team standings with 496 points.
The Big Green 200-yard medley A relay started the evening off with a third-place finish with a time of 1:30.87. Made up of Verhagen, senior Jay Schulte, sophomore David Harmon and senior Ian Woon, the relay finished almost a full second ahead of Columbia's A relay and less than three seconds behind Princeton, who won the event with a 1:27.60. Dartmouth's B relay placed ninth in 1:35.08.
Junior Logan Briggs finished highest for the Green in the 400-yard IM, coming in third place in 3:58.20, dropping over a second from his morning swim. Harmon had a strong swim in the 100-yard butterfly, placing fourth in 48.50, while Verhagen was seventh with a time of 49.99.
In the 200-yard freestyle, freshman Tony Shen was the first of three Dartmouth swimmers to finish, coming in third place with a 1:39.58. Woon was fifth in 1:41.36 and freshman Misha Tovmashenko rounded out the A final with an eighth-place finish of 1:42.66. In the B final, classmate Bruno Korbar dropped well over a second off his time from prelims, swimming a 1:40.61 to take 11th.
Seniors Konrad Von Moltke and Schulte competed in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing fifth and eighth with times of 57.16 and 57.64, respectively. Following soon after Verhagen in the 100 back was fellow junior Aaron Athanas, who was fourth in 49.40.
The final day of the Brown Invitational will commence at 10 a.m. with the 200-yard backstroke.
