HANOVER, N.H. – Five first-half goals and a breakout day from senior Ali Savage that included her 100th career point helped the Dartmouth field hockey team earn its first win of the season Saturday afternoon against visiting Brown at Chase AstroTurf Field.
The win pushed the Big Green's record to 1-5 and 1-1 in Ivy League contests. The Bears drop to 4-2 overall and 0-2 in conference matchups.

“We played as a cohesive unit for a full 70 minutes,” head coach Amy Fowler said following the win. “We talked about and worked a lot on finishing plays this week and that was something we saw come to fruition to a great extent in the first half today.
“I was pleased with the group scoring and seeing a lot of people contributing on the scoresheet,” Fowler continued. “Our ability to possess the ball was a big part of that.”
After two goals in the first half and an assist in the second, Savage's five points left her exactly at 100 for her career, becoming just the fourth player in program history to reach the century mark for scoring.
Dartmouth looked nothing like a team that came in having not won a game in its first five tries this season. The Green dominated the first 10 minutes of play, building its lead to 3-0 in the opening 7:59 of action on goals from Savage, Anna Rowthorn-Apel and Julia Donald.
Savage's first of two in the game came on a redirect at the goal line after she started the play by pushing out on a corner play.
Less than a minute later, Brown was whistled for an infraction in the circle, giving Dartmouth a penalty shot. Having yet to play a minute in the game, Rowthorn-Apel was summoned from the sidelines to attempt the shot. Bears' goalkeeper Shannon McSweeney was able to get a piece of it with her right hand, but the power behind the shot propelled it into the netting for the second goal. For the freshman, the goal was the first of her collegiate career.
Julia Donald also got into the action as she netted the first of her career in the eighth minute. Donald managed to knock home a rebound after a scrum of action in front of McSweeney to give the home team the early three-goal advantage.
Dartmouth built the lead to five just before halftime as sophomore Heather Zezzo got her first of the season and the second of her career on a twice-redirected shot in the 28th minute. Savage made it 5-0 with her second of the day, putting the ball into a gaping netmouth after a beautiful feed through traffic from freshman Laura Donald in the 33rd minute of play.
Brown's Jacyln Torres managed the only shot to beat senior goalkeeper Ellen Meyer on this day, scoring on a partial rush in the 34th minute.
Julia Donald's second of the day came on another great passing play from the Big Green and resulted in the lone score of the second stanza. Savage pushed the ball up the right side of the field before shaking off a defender and sliding a pass through the middle of the circle for Donald to knock into the far left corner.
For Savage, the point was the 100th of her career, joining Kelly Hood '12 (134), Lauren Welsh '03 (113) and Lauren Scopaz '99 (112) as the only Dartmouth student-athletes to reach the milestone figure.
Meyer put together one of her best outings of the season, stopping eight shots in just over 61 minutes of action and picking up her first win of the year. Her best play of the day came as she stopped Lucy Kelly on the game's third combined penalty stroke attempt, swatting away the high shot with her blocker. She gave way to sophomore Paige Duffy for the final nine minutes in the Green's cage, while McSweeney was saddled with the loss after allowing six and stopping five.
Dartmouth held a 23-23 advantage in shots and a 10-6 edge in corners.
The Big Green return to action Sunday when they host Bryant in a 2 p.m. non-conference affair at Chase Field.
