HANOVER, N.H. – Freshman Julia Donald tied the game with 1:31 left in regulation and senior Ali Savage scored 5:50 into overtime to give the Dartmouth field hockey team a 3-2 win Sunday afternoon over visiting non-conference Bryant at Chase Field.
With the triumph, the Big Green move to 2-5 overall after a weekend sweep of two Rhode Island teams that also included a 6-1 victory Saturday against Brown. The Bulldogs dropped their overall record to 2-7 with the defeat.

Savage's overtime winner not only gave the home team its first victory in OT since Nov. 6, 2011 when it best Cornell, 1-0, in Hanover in the final game of the season, but was also the 42nd of her career, moving her alone into third all-time at Dartmouth. She now trails only Kelly Hood '12 (58) and Lauren Welsh '03 (47) in program history.
The senior tri-captain opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with her first of the day and third of the weekend, finishing off a nice give-and-go play with fellow classmate and captain Janine Leger.
Bethany Winkin was all the offense Bryant would need on this sunny and hot afternoon in the Upper Valley, netting her first of the game with exactly three minutes remaining in the opening half and her second just nine and a half minutes into the final frame of regulation.
Holding on to that 2-1 lead, the Bulldogs' defense was put to the test in the final minutes, trying to keep a surging Dartmouth attack at bay.
That defensive stand, though, eventually succumbed as Julia Donald's third of the season slammed off the back panel of the goal cage and set off an eruption on the Big Green's sideline. Fresh off a two-goal game against Brown the day before, Donald was able to corral a rebound kicked out into the circle, spin to reposition herself and fire a low, hard shot that beat Bryant's Megan Hancock for the equalizer with just 1:31 showing on the scoreboard.
With the game headed to overtime and just seven total players from each team lined up, the field was much more open in terms of space to move unobstructed. Dartmouth capitalized on that extra room, controlling much of the tempo and forcing the play into the offensive end.
However, the game-winning goal was the result of a solid defensive stand that included thwarting a penalty corner play by the visiting team. That led to a long clearing ball that Joanne Nazareth redirected at midfield ahead to Savage in full sprint.
The Australian native collected the ball, made a move around a defender and brought the play into the circle on the left side. Another quick juke move toward the top of the circle brought the goalkeeper out of position and down early, allowing Savage to continue her path to the right and slide the shot into the back of the open netmouth for the winner.
The Big Green also got another strong game from senior goalkeeper Ellen Meyer, who turned aside six shots and allowed just the two Winkin tallies. She finished the weekend with 14 saves and three goals allowed. At the other end, Hancock stopped seven shots in the loss.
The Green held a 25-19 advantage in shots, including a 3-0 margin in overtime. The home team also earned eight corners to Bryant's six in the game with each earning one in the extra session.
This was the seventh all-time meeting between the two teams with the Big Green having now won six of those affairs.
Dartmouth will wrap-up the current three-game homestand next Saturday, Oct. 4, against Penn at noon.
