Both senior Ali Savage and freshman Anna Rowthorn-Apel scored a pair of goals in the opening frame to give the Big Green a 4-0 lead at the half. For Savage, it marked the third straight game in which the senior has found the back of the cage twice, scoring six of her seven goals this season during that stretch. On this day against Penn, Savage opened the scoring with tallies in the 13th and 20th minutes, respectively.
Rowthorn-Apel scored the next two, starting with a penalty stroke in the 30th minute, followed by another just a minute and 49 seconds later by batting a ball out of mid-air and into the open netmouth.
The score remained 4-0 until roughly 12 minutes left in regulation when the Quakers' attack finally awoke. Elise Tilton and Elizabeth Hitti started the rally as they scored two goals separated by just 20 seconds to cut the deficit in half.
It stayed a two-goal game for just another two-thirds of a minute as Alexa Hoover capped the 62-second stretch with Penn's third marker to pull to within one, 4-3.
However, Dartmouth shook off the rust of the defensive lapse and answered back with Janine Leger's first of the season in the 62nd minute, a mere 2:18 of gameplay later, to push the lead back to two.
Leger had a goal and an assist after making the pass on Savage's first of the game. In turn, Savage had two goals and an assist as she set up Leger's marker in near identical fashion to the Green's opening tally.
Aside from the second-half stretch, senior goalkeeper Ellen Meyer was strong, stopping nine in earning the win. She was aided by yet another defensive save from junior Clare Detrick-Yee — her team-leading second of the year.
At the other end of the field, Quakers goalkeeper Allison Weisenfels finished with five saves, while allowing five in the loss.
Penn held advantages in both total shots (20-17), shots on goal (13-10) and penalty corners (9-7), despite Dartmouth dominating the scoreboard for a majority of the contest.
The Big Green return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they take on the Maine Black Bears in Orono. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
