HANOVER, N.H. – No. 63 Dartmouth women's tennis improved to 3-0 on the freshly started season with a 4-3 victory over Mississippi State in Boss Tennis Center on Sunday morning.
The deciding point was a 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 victory by senior Akiko Okuda over Louise Ronaldson at No. 4.
"This was another outstanding team performance and we showed a lot of character ater dropping doubles against a very powerful, well-coached team," head coach Bob Dallis said.
The doubles team of junior Taylor Ng and freshman Kristina Mathis had a 6-4 defeat of Naomi Tran and Martina Frantova at No. 1, but it was Mississippi State that took the lead heading into singles after winning the other two doubles matches.
Trailing 2-1, the Big Green turned things around to take the lead and then win the match. In the top spot, Ng had a 6-3, 6-2 win over Georgiana Patrasc and, at No. 3, Mathis defeated Tran by a score of 6-4, 6-0. Both Okuda (No. 4) and junior Katherine Yau (No. 2) had to go to three sets after falling in close second sets, but came back to win their matches.
Next weekend, the Green and White will host Boston University on Friday and Miami on Sunday.
