HUNTINGTON/SMUGGLER'S NOTCH, Vt. — Sophomore
Fabian Stocek (Jilemnice, Czech Republic) won the men's 10K Classic to help the Dartmouth ski team finish the first day of the St. Michael's Carnival at Sleepy Hollow and Smuggler's Notch in second place with 380 points, just ahead of New Hampshire (376) and Middlebury (359). Vermont tallied 466 to open up a sizable lead by winning both the men's and women's giant slalom.
Skiing without the services of sophomore
Patrick Caldwell (Lyme, New Hampshire), who had won the previous three Nordic races at the Vermont and Bates Carnivals but is currently skiing at the U23 Cross Country Championships in Kazakhstan, Stocek stepped up to keep the top spot on the podium the realm of the Big Green. His time of 31:07.6 allowed him to finish more than six seconds ahead of UNH's Eirik Fosnaes. The other Dartmouth skiers to score points were a pair of Minnesotans in sophomore
Jan Ketterson (Bloomington, Minnesota) in 11th place at 32:29.0 and freshman
Luke Brown (St. Paul, Minnesota) in 15th with a time of 32:47.2. New Hampshire took the team title, however, with 112 points, edging Vermont (109) and the Big Green (105).
The other podium finish on the day for Dartmouth was provided by
Dylan Brooks in the men's giant slalom. The sophomore from Mammoth Lakes, California, was impressive on both of his runs, posting the second-fastest time on his first trip down the mountain, and the best time on the second trip to finish at 1:50.76. That put him second overall behind Middlebury's Robert Cone, who came in at 1:50.23. Senior
Hunter Black (Keystone, Colorado) slipped into the top 10, tying Vermont's Taylor Wunsch for 10th place with a combined time of 1:52.51, freshman Kevyn Read (Calgary, Alberta) scored for the Big Green with his 16th-place finish in 1:52.85. The trio tallied 101 points, good for second in the team standings behind Vermont's 110.
The women's alpine squad also placed second, scoring 103 points with freshman
Foreste Peterson (Berkeley, California) leading the Big Green with a combined time of 1:53.28, just five-hundredths of a second from claiming a spot on the podium in fifth place. Two other Dartmouth skiers finished in the top 10 as well with freshman
Kelly Moore (Ottawa, Ontario) ninth in 1:54.10 and junior
Maisie Ide (Minneapolis, Minnesota) right behind in 10th at 1:54.30. But with Catamounts finishing one-two on the podium and two others in the top seven, Vermont easily beat the field with 134 points.
Back at Sleepy Hollow, junior
Mary O'Connell (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) began the day with a 10th-place finish in the women's 5K Classic to pace the Dartmouth squad, crossing the finish line in 18:15.6. Freshman
Cara Piske (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) and junior
Molly Siegel (Bethel, Maine) completed the course one behind the other with Piske in 23rd at 18:50.3 and Siegel 24th at 18:52.8. Middlebury's Heather Mooney won the race by just over 30 seconds in 17:18.3, allowing the Panthers to edge Vermont for the team title, 118-113.
Dartmouth will return to the two venues on Saturday morning to conclude the carnival.
