TUESDAY'S GAME
The Dartmouth field hockey team returns to Hanover after three straight road games to take on non-conference Maine Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green dropped a heartbreaking, double-overtime thriller Saturday afternoon at Penn, 3-2. The Quakers scored with just a minute and 17 seconds remaining in the second OT session to win their ninth straight game and serving up a crushing blow to a Dartmouth team that fought back with a goal late in regulation to force the sudden-victory periods.
SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS
The Green and White will go from one challenging team to another as Maine comes to Hanover with a 12-2 overall record this season and a five-game win streak. The Black Bears are a perfect 5-0 in true road games with a 3-1 neutral-site record this year to boot, demonstrating an effective style of play away from Orono. Libby Riedl and Sydney Veljacic share the team lead in scoring with 20 points apiece. Veljacic leads the way with nine goals, while Riedl's 10 assists are the most on the roster. Goalkeeping duties have been split between Emma Cochran and Emily Corbett, two players with similar names who have nearly identical stat lines, including 6-1 records.
AGAINST MAINE
The Black Bears hold the 14-6-0 edge in the 20 all-time meetings between the two programs, including wins in each of the last five contests dating back to 2009. Dartmouth's last victory at the expense of Maine was a 3-2 overtime win at home on Aug. 31, 2007, the season opener for the Green.
CAREER DAY
She may have been dealt a loss in the 99th minute of play, but goalkeeper Paige Duffy was outstanding against Penn on Saturday. The junior finished with a career-high 13 saves in the game, including a huge stop on the Ivy League's top offensive player, Alexa Hoover, on a penalty stroke in the first OT, allowing her team to continue play into the game's fourth period.
LATE LEADER
Once again when the Big Green needed a big-time goal, they got it from sophomore Julia Donald. The Kimberton, Pennsylvania, native scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season on a redirect in the 66th minute to tie the game with the Quakers and send the game to OT. In seven fewer games than she played as a freshman this year, Donald already has more than doubled her goal-scoring output of four from a season ago.
SCORING TOUCH
Senior Brooke Van Valkenburg had amassed just six goals in her 51 career games coming into the 2015 campaign. She has nearly matched that through Dartmouth's first 10 contests of the fall after scoring her fifth of the season at Penn Park in the 48th minute of Saturday's tilt. The goal gives the Garden City, New York, native 30 points in her collegiate career.
YOU NEVER SEE THAT…
Saturday's contest marked the Green and White's first foray into double overtime in almost exactly five years, dating back to an Oct. 12, 2010 contest with UMass (L, 5-4).
