HANOVER – N.H. The Dartmouth men's soccer team remains undefeated in Ivy League play with a 2-1, victory over Columbia at Burnham Field on Saturday evening.
With the win, the Big Green improve to 8-3-1 overall and 4-0-0 in the Ivy. The loss dropped Columbia to 8-4-1 overall and 2-2-0 in conference play.
In an aggressive game where the teams drew a combined 31 fouls and six yellow cards, Dartmouth was able to prevail thanks in part to two goals in the first half. The Green struck first when freshman Eduvie Ikoba netted his third goal of the season just before the 27-minute mark. Sophomore Matt Greer assisted on the goal that gave the Big Green the early lead.
With 2:08 left to play in the first half, the Big Green tacked on another goal from freshman Justin Donawa, which was his first of the season. Donawa fired off a shot from 40 yards out to beat Columbia netminder Kyle Jackson for the 2-0 lead.
“I think any Ivy League game has so much meaning and Columbia is a very good team,” Dartmouth head coach Chad Riley said. “I give credit to them, they really stretched us tonight. I thought we kept our composure really well and we kept focused on the task at hand.”
Dartmouth continued to keep pressure on Jackson, but the Lions crept back. With 30 minutes left to play, Columbia's Fredrick Elliot scored on a rebound to bring the Lions back within one.
With 15:45 to go, the Green nearly added an insurance goal, forcing Jackson to make a leaping save. He finished the night with four stops for the Lions.
Big Green goalie Stefan Cleveland remained perfect the rest of the night, finishing with four saves on 14 shots.
Dartmouth returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 27, on the road at UNH before a huge showdown with Ivy League foe Harvard on Sat. Oct 31, in Cambridge. The Big Green return home on Tuesday Nov. 3, to take on Northeastern.
