THIS WEEKEND
After hosting just one game last weekend, the No. 10 Dartmouth women's hockey team will host two ECAC Hockey opponents this coming Friday and Saturday, taking on St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
LAST TIME OUT
For the second year in a row, Harvard came to Thompson Arena ranked fifth in the nation and, for the second year in a row, it left with a loss. At the other end of the spectrum, Dartmouth opened its 2015-16 season in spectacular fashion, knocking off a top-10 team and ECAC Hockey foe, 2-1, in front of a vocal crowd Friday night. The Crimson got on the board first with a Miye D'Oench power-play marker at 12:54, just five seconds away from the teams returning to even strength. Lindsey Allen's first goal of the season was initially reviewed to determine if it indeed crossed the line before the green light ending the period illuminated. Upon review by the referees, the goal was confirmed as it hit the back of the net with 0.4 showing on the clock, sending the teams to the first intermission tied at 1-1. Kennedy Ottenbreit's eventual game winner was the result of some nifty passing from Allen and Kate Landers entering the zone. Two drop passes saw the puck eventually land on Ottenbreit's tape where she snapped off a wrister that beat Harvard's Emerance Maschmeyer. A late third-period push by the Crimson fell short as Dartmouth earned its second straight win against its rivals from Cambridge for the first time since the 2010-11 and 2011-12 campaigns.
INTO THE RANKINGS WE GO
Dartmouth made its 2015-16 debut in both latest releases of the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Polls and are ranked 10th in both with 11 points. Harvard is the only other Ivy League program to be featured on the list, slipping a few spots from fifth to eighth in the USCHO rankings and from fifth to seventh by USA Hockey following the loss in Hanover. ECAC Hockey foes Clarkson and Quinnipiac also appear in the middle of both polls at fourth and fifth, respectively.
SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCE
Whereas the Green are just one game into the season, the Saints are entering double digits. They struggled at the beginning of the 2015-16 campaign, going 0-5-1 in their first six contests, but have not lost a game since dropping a 7-3 decision to Boston College on Oct. 12. St. Lawrence defeated Vermont twice (4-0, 3-2) and, over the weekend, had a 3-2 win over Syracuse. Kennedy Marchment and Amanda Boulier share the lead on the team, as Marchment has five goals and four assists and Boulier has netted a pair of tallies and tacked on seven helpers.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE SAINTS
Dartmouth and St. Lawrence met three times last season, twice at the start of the year and once as the last regular-season game. In a non-conference, neutral-site game in early November, the Big Green defeated the Saints, 5-1, being led by Allen's hat trick. Playing on St. Lawrence's home ice six days later, Dartmouth suffered a 5-1 loss and fell, 6-4, on Senior Day in February.
SCOUTING CLARKSON
The 2014-15 ECAC Hockey regular season co-champions are off to a fantastic start this year and are riding a nine-game winning streak. Cayley Mercer leads the team and is sixth in the nation with 17 points from 10 goals and seven helpers.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
For the second year in a row, the Big Green faced top seed Clarkson in the Quarterfinal of the ECAC Hockey Tournament. Dartmouth ultimately fell in both games.
CAPTAINS
Dartmouth is led by captains Catherine Berghuis and Laura Stacey and alternate captains Kennedy Ottenbreit and Eleni Tebano.
FRESH FACES
Making their collegiate debut this season are Caroline Shaunessy, Alyssa Baker, Tess Bracken, Kate Landers, Shannon Ropp and Christie Honor. There is a nice mixture of positions, as two are forwards (Baker, Landers), two are defensemen (Shaunessy, Bracken) and a pair will be vying for playing time in Dartmouth's crease (Ropp, Honor).
AND IN NET…
Against Harvard, Robyn Chemago allowed just one goal and made 20 saves throughout her 60 minutes between the pipes, earning her first win of the season. She was named the ECAC Hockey Women's Goaltender of the Week on Tuesday for her performance. Joining Chemago are Ropp and Honor, who both appeared in net in the game against McGill, playing 20 minutes apiece and registering six saves each.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Big Green will hit the road for the first time this year next weekend, heading to Brown and Yale on Nov. 6 and 7.
