The Big Green (7-2-2, 0-1-1 Ivy) got two goals from senior Jill Dayneka, the second and third of her collegiate career after entering the game with just two points in three previous seasons.
With the win, the Tigers improved to 7-3-0 and are unbeaten in conference play with a record of 2-0-0.
“This is a tough one to be on the losing side because we put in such a great effort,” head coach Ron Rainey said. “This was a great Ivy League game with tremendous pace and tempo and was a lot of fun to be a part of.”
Princeton's Mimi Ason netted the opening tally in the 14th minute to give the Tigers the early 1-0 lead. That's when Dayneka and Brittany Champagne hooked up twice on the same type play to get the home team on the board.
Both markers were the results of Champagne corner kicks into the box where Dayneka was stationed at the far post for headers each time. The goals for the Solon, Ohio, native came in the 27th and 43rd minutes, respectively.
Asom matched Dayneka by notching her second of the match fresh off the halftime intermission, beating a defender and sliding the equalizer into the bottom corner in the 47th minute.
Goalkeeper Casey Cousineau answered the call the rest of the way, making several of her six total saves down the stretch to force the extra stanza.
“Casey made some really good saves for us tonight when we needed them most,” Rainey remarked. “Without her play tonight, I don't think we even get to overtime against a good Princeton team.”
However, Cousineau was unable to make the final save of the game as Larkin headed in a ball that pinballed around the box after a loss freekick from near midfield, giving the Tigers the critical conference win.
In losing, Dartmouth saw its eight-game unbeaten streak (6-0-2) come to a halt.
For the game, Princeton lead in shots, 17-10, while the home team held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. Hannah Winner picked up the win in the visitors' goal, stopping three shots.
Dartmouth returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 10, in New Haven, Connecticut, against Yale in another Ivy League battle. Tuesday's game with Hampton has been canceled.
