CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Following a goal by Lindsay Knutson and Harvard's Emily Mosbacher in the second half, the Dartmouth women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with the Crimson in double overtime in Cambridge on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Green are now 7-4-4 overall, 0-3-3 in the Ivy League, while Harvard is 7-7-2 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play.
In the first half, neither team could find its offensive footing sending the game into halftime tied 0-0. The Crimson controlled play during the game's first stanza, as Harvard outshot Dartmouth 5-1. The Big Green's best scoring chance came just before the 39th minute when a shot by junior midfielder, Holly Patterson hit the goal post.
Just five minutes into the second half, Dartmouth broke the scoreless tie when Lucielle Kozlov connected with Knutson to the left of the goal who fired a shot past Crimson netminder Lizzie Durack. Knutson's second goal of the season gave the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later, Harvard responded with the equalizer when a free kick by the Crimson's leading scorer, Margaret Purce, was headed in by Mosbacher, for her second of the season. After the Harvard score, the Green tightened up and kept the ball in the Crimson's end of the field for the remainder of regulation. After neither squad could find the back of the net, the game went into overtime.
In the first extra frame, Dartmouth's Remy Borinsky attempted two shots, as one was high over the net and the other was blocked by the Harvard defense. Big Green goalkeeper Casey Cousineau remained perfect in the first overtime period after seeing three shots. She finished the game with four saves.
“I thought today we competed for 110 minutes,” Dartmouth head coach Ron Rainey said. “We didn't play a perfect game, but we had some great repetitions and made some mistakes, but we competed. We were mentally competitive for the 110 minutes and it was necessary because Harvard is a very good team.”
The game's final 10 minute overtime was a stalemate as well, as the Big Green forced Durack to make two saves on shots from Lauren Lucas and Jackie Friedman. Harvard has its chances as well as Purce recorded two shots, including one that hit the goalpost. Heading into the contest, Rainey knew containing a player like Purce would be important in Cambridge.
“We did a nice job with her,” Rainey said. “I think our team did a great job being patient in its defending and also giving really good cover. She is a dangerous player. Overall we forced her to take shots from distance as opposed to getting anything in the box so that made us real happy a team and as a coaching staff.”
Dartmouth will close out the season against Cornell on Saturday, Nov. 7, in the first game of a doubleheader at Burnham Field. The Big Green will also honor their four seniors prior to the 1 p.m. kickoff.
