ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Sophomore Devin Buffalo made 37 saves in his first career start as the Dartmouth men's hockey team earned a 1-1 tie with No. 12 Michigan Saturday night at Yost Arena.
Carl Hesler scored the lone Big Green (2-5-1) goal of the game just 2:40 into the first period. Tony Calderone netted the Wolverines' (7-2-2) tally midway through the third period to salvage the draw for the home team.
For his efforts, Buffalo was named the first star of the game, an honor that never seemed in question.
“It was a dream come true, honestly,” Buffalo said. “If you told me five years ago that I'd be playing college hockey and making my first career start at Michigan, I don't know if I would've believed you.”
His 37 saves were spread equally over 65 minutes of play with 10 in the first and third periods, respectively, 12 in the second and five in overtime.
“Devin played with so much confidence, hunger and desire out there tonight,” head coach Bob Gaudet '81 remarked. “We've always known he was a good goalie, but everyone else was able to see that here.”
Hesler's second of the season was the product of a redirected puck off his skate and between the pads of starter Steve Racine with the helpers going to seniors Geoff Ferguson and Jack Barre.
Racine was injured in the first period, giving way to Zach Naglevoort for the final 50-plus minutes. Naglevoort also played outstanding, stopping 30 and not allowing another Dartmouth goal.
It wasn't until 7:56 into the third that either team managed to find the back of the net again as Calderone was able to solve Buffalo only by virtue of a goal that initially waved off before a review deemed it had crossed the line prior to the whistle sounding.
The Wolverines won the exhibition shootout, 1-0, but the game officially goes into the NCAA record books at a 1-1 tie, the first draw in the eight-game all-time series between the two programs (Michigan, 4-3-1).
Special teams may have dominated Friday's game, but Saturday's contest was all about the penalty kill as Dartmouth was 4-for-4 and the home team going 5-for-5.
Michigan outshout the Big Green, 38-35, despite an 18-shot third-period onslaught by the visitors.
The Big Green are back out on the road next weekend with a pair of ECAC Hockey games at Rensselaer and Union next Friday and Saturday nights.
