TROY, N.Y. – Senior Brett Patterson scored his second goal of the season 8:51 into the third period to help the Dartmouth men to a 2-1 ECAC Hockey win Friday night at Houston Field House.
For the Engineers, the loss was their first of the season against a league foe, falling to 4-1-2 in conference games and 8-6-2 overall. The Big Green improve to 3-4-0 in league contests and 3-5-1 overall.
Dartmouth's first goal came off the stick of Carl Hesler at 13:25 of the first, his second goal in as many games and his third of 2015-16.
Sophomore Devin Buffalo made his second career start in goal, making 28 saves to earn his first collegiate win.
“We got a puck deep and Grant (Opperman) and Brad (Schierhorn) caused a turnover that got the puck to me,” Patterson said. “It's always good to come in here against RPI and get a 'W' against a tough, physical team like they are.
“It felt great to play well and help Devin get his first collegiate win under his belt,” Patterson continued.
Kevin Neiley set up the Hesler goal on a centering feed after digging the puck out of the corner. For Neiley, it was his first career point. Freshman defender Karan Toor also picked up his first career point, getting an assist on Patterson's goal by holding the puck at the blueline and getting the puck to Opperman at the halfboards.
RPI's lone goal came from Milos Bubela 11:53 into the second, tying the game midway through. However, the Patterson goal proved to be the home team's undoing, as the Engineers fell behind and then had to play down a man for five minutes after a Lou Nanne hitting from behind that resulted in a major and a game misconduct.
Buffalo got the win, but Rensselaer's Cam Hackett was also strong in goal, making 34 saves in the losing effort.
Dartmouth outshot RPI, 36-29, for the game.
The Big Green are back in action up the road Saturday night at Union in Schenectady. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. at Messa Rink.
