HANOVER, N.H. – On the day they played their final collegiate game, the senior members of the Dartmouth field hockey team were outstanding in a 5-4 overtime loss against visiting Cornell in the 2015 finale.
Brooke Van Valkenburg, Eliza Becker and Clare Detrick-Yee all scored in their last contest wearing the Big Green (7-10, 2-5 Ivy) jersey, while Jessica Barfield and Rebecca Hu also added key contributions in their final appearance at Chase Field.
However, the day was spoiled by the Big Red's (11-6, 5-2 Ivy) late comeback that saw the visitors overcome a 4-2 deficit with two goals in the final 10 minutes to force OT where Katie Carlson would net the winner 5:09 into the extra session.
It was impressive that the Big Green had held a two-goal lead that late in the game considering they were outshot, 29-7, in the contest. But a career-high 15 saves from junior goalkeeper Paige Duffy, as well as a pair of defensive saves from Detrick-Yee and another from Morgan Philie held Cornell at bay throughout.
Becker scored in just the second minute of the day with her sixth goal of the season, but was matched less than two minutes later by Cornell's Marisa Siergiej. Van Valkeburg didn't waste much time in scoring her ninth tally of the season in the eighth minute, but, like they had before, the Big Red pulled even shortly thereafter on a Krysten Mayers marker 12:03 into the game.
It stayed 2-2 until the 52nd minute when Detrick-Yee notched just the second goal of her career to put the Green and White back in front. Joanne Nazareth somehow managed to sneak her second goal of the season over the line in the 58th minute to put the home team up a pair.
That was when Cornell responded with the final two goals of regulation to pull the teams even and force Dartmouth into just its third OT contest of the season. Siergiej's second of the day made it a 4-3 game, while Katy Weeks tied things up in the 67th minute to set up the dramatic finish in the season finale for both squads.
Playing in her final game after five seasons with the team, Hu picked up an assist on the Becker tally that opened the scoring. Van Valkenburg also had a helper in the game, as did Anna Ewasechko.
The Red held a stunning 14-3 edge in penalty corners in addition to their 22-shot edge in attempts.
