RIPTON/HANCOCK, Vt. — On a cold, biting day that led to the delay of the start of the cross country races at the Rikert Nordic Center, Dartmouth found itself sitting in third place at the Middlebury Carnival after the first four events. Senior Silas Talbot (Anchorage, Alaska) and junior Corey Stock (Lincoln, Massachusetts) both garnered spots on the podium in their respective races, but both Vermont (458 points) and the New Hampshire (407) finished the day ahead of the Big Green (389), while Middlebury (381) was lurching close behind in fourth.
Led by Talbot, Dartmouth emerged victorious in the team standings in the 10K Classic race. The senior finished 5.9 seconds behind Vermont's Jorgen Grav with a time of 26:13.5 to claim second place. The Big Green also got strong performances from freshman Luke Brown (St. Paul, Minnesota) comfortably in fifth in 26:51.6 while sophomore Fabian Stocek (Jilemnice, Czech Republic) edged out Rogan Brown of Vermont for seventh by less than a second with a time of 27:02.3. The trio combined to produce 121 points to beat out the Catamounts who collected 114.
Stock shone for the women in the 10K Classic, finishing third in 31:34.2, trailing only Heather Mooney of Middlebury (31:01.2) and Annika Taylor of UNH (31:11.0). Others scoring for the Big Green were juniors Molly Siegel (Bethel, Maine) and Mary O'Connell (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) in 22nd (33:39.8) and 27th (34:05.2), respectively. The host Panthers led the field in the event with 112 points, while Dartmouth placed fifth with 83.
While the Nordic teams waited until the afternoon, the slalom got under way at the Snow Bowl as scheduled. Although the Big Green did not place anyone on the podium, the women's alpine team did have three finish among the top eight, led by junior Lizzie Kistler (Santa Rosa, California) in fifth place. Her combined time of 1:42.60 bested her teammates, junior Maisie Ide (Minneapolis, Minnesota) in seventh at 1:43.18 and freshman Foreste Peterson in eighth (1:43.40). The team standings were tight with Vermont nipping Colby, 119-109, with the Big Green in third with 107 points.
Sophomore Prescott McLaughlin (Millbrook, N.Y.) placed in the top 10 for the men with a combined time of 1:33.02. Other skiers to put points on the board for Dartmouth were senior Ben Morse (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) in 17th in 1:33.33 and sophomore Dylan Brooks (Mammoth Lakes, California) in 25th in 1:33.74. With their 78 points, the Big Green finished fourth with Vermont atop the standings with three of the top five skiers for 124 points.
The carnival will conclude on Saturday, beginning with the first run of the women's giant slalom at 9:30 a.m. and the women's 5K Free at 10 a.m.
