HAMILTON, N.Y. –The Dartmouth women's hockey team opened its final road weekend with a 5-2 victory over Colgate on Friday night, officially clinching a spot in the upcoming ECAC Hockey Tournament. The Green are currently tied for seventh in the conference with Yale.
The Big Green improved to 12-11-2 and 8-9-2 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Raiders dipped to 7-23-1 and 4-14-1 in conference play.
"I thought we did a lot of the little and improtant things right," head coach Mark Hudak said. "It was a very physical game and I think that the players handled it well. They kept their poise and we got some timely goals when we needed them."
Senior Karlee Odland and sophomore Kennedy Ottenbreit led the team with two points apiece, with Odland scoring the first two goals of the game and Ottenbreit tallying one goal and one helper. Nine other Dartmouth players ended the evening with a point apiece.
Early in the second, after a scoreless first period, the Green wreaked havoc on Colgate's Ashlynne Rando, firing four consecutive shots at the Raiders' net until one finally made it past the goalie. Rando thwarted sophomore Olivia Whitford and freshman Brooke Ahbe, but Odland was able to pocket the rebounded puck at 4:46 in the second to give Dartmouth a short-lived lead.
At 8:18, Melissa Kueber tied things at one with the extra skater but, at 13:16, Odland got her second of the night, receiving passes from senior Samantha Zeiss and Ottenbreit and shooting through the netminder's legs. This one-goal lead was increased to two with less than two minutes remaining in the period when junior Lindsey Allen scored her 17th of the season, with assists going to junior Ailish Forfar and sophomore Emma Korbs.
Sophomore Devon Moir scored her first of the year at 8:04 in the final stanza from directly outside the cage but at 11:40, a wandering puck brought sophomore Robyn Chemago away from her post, allowing Megan Sullivan to lessen the gap to two. After Colgate pulled its goalie, Ottenbreit shot the puck from the other side of the blueline at 16:53 to all but end the game.
Dartmouth outshot Colgate, 35-25. Chemago and Rando both ended the night with 23 saves, while Brooks stopped seven shots after entering the game at the beginning of the third.
The Big Green will take on Ivy League and ECAC Hockey foe No. 10 Cornell at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
