ITHACA, N.Y. – After scoring just 24 seconds into the game, the Dartmouth women's hockey team took down No. 10 Cornell, 3-2, in its final road game of the 2014-15 regular season on Valentine's Day.
The Big Green picked up their second straight win and improved to 13-11-2 and 9-9-2 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Big Red, which went 0-2 at home this weekend, dipped to 14-10-3 and 12-6-2 in conference action. The last time Dartmouth defeated Cornell was on Nov. 11, 2011.
Junior Ailish Forfar led the Green with three points, netting the team's first two goals of the game and tacking on an assist on the last marker. Classmates Lindsey Allen and Laura Stacey ended the day with two points apiece.
A goal by Forfar with 19:36 remaining in the opening period started things off in Dartmouth's favor. Stacey's point-blank shot was saved by Paula Voorheis' left kneepad, but the rebounded puck was sent directly to Forfar waiting by the left pipe, easily pushing the puck behind the goalie.
The Big Red tied the score at 8:54 and then took the lead at 14:33 off two goals scored by Jillian Saulnier. The Big Green looked to end the period in a similar fashion to the way they started it by scoring with less than 30 ticks left on the clock, but back-to-back shots by Forfar and Stacey were turned away by Voorheis before another by Stacey hit the pipe. Sophomore Robyn Chemago had a big 20 minutes, making 15 saves.
Cornell nearly pulled two ahead at 7:15 in the second when Chemago was taken away from her post to pick up a loose puck behind the net, but the netminder regained her position just in time to save a shot sent by Sydney Smith by sliding to the left. At 15:17, Dartmouth tied things at two when Forfar netted the deflected shot sent by Allen mere seconds before.
At 6:28 in the third, the Big Green resumed their role in the lead when Allen appeared out of nowhere to intercept a Cornell pass and buried the puck in the right corner of the net, scoring her second of the weekend and her 18th marker overall. Although both the team and Chemago were tested in the remaining minutes of the game, Dartmouth was able to hold on to the one-goal lead to end the game in a victory.
Cornell outshot Dartmouth, 46-29. Chemago wrapped up the day with a career-high 44 saves, stopping 19 shots in the final period, while Voorheis had 26 saves.
Dartmouth will host its last two games of the season next weekend, taking on No. 8 Clarkson at 7 p.m. on Friday and St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. the next day. This will be the Green's final regular season games before the ECAC Hockey Tournament, which will open on Feb. 27.
