CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Top-seeded Harvard defeated No. 2 seed Dartmouth men's tennis in the finals of the ECAC Indoor Championship at the Murr Tennis Center on Monday afternoon.
The Big Green, which is ranked 50th in the nation, dipped to 5-4 on the season, while the No. 30 Crimson is now 6-2. Dartmouth improved on its third-place finish from last year's Championship.
Although Harvard claimed the doubles point by winning at No. 1 and 3 doubles, junior Brendan Tannenbaum and sophomore Max Schmidt upset the sweep by defeating Nicky Hu and Sebastian Beltrame, 6-3, at the No. 2 position.
In the match that ultimately decided which team won the doubles point, the 16th-ranked pairing of junior Dovydas Sakinis and senior Chris Kipouras fought hard against No. 15 Denis Nguyen and Brian Yeung, falling in a very close match by a score of 7-6(1).
The Crimson shut the match down by taking four of the singles points, leaving the other two unfinished. At the No. 2 position, No. 93 Kipouras won the first set against No. 80 Beltrame, 6-3, before dropping the second set by the same score. Nguyen was leading, 2-1, when the match was retired. At the No. 6 position, Schmidt had taken the first set, 6-4, and was leading, 3-2, when the match was stopped.
Dartmouth wastes no time returning to action, hosting Binghamton at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20.
